From their website: We are a non-profit organization run entirely by volunteers, and have been helping the needy families of Oakville since 1988. We currently serve 350 to 420 families (approx. 1,300 people) per month from our location at 1240 Speers Road, between 3rd Line and 4th Line.

2024 Polaris Prize Long List Including Local Artists

From the Polaris Prize website:

The Polaris Music Prize, presented by CBC Music, has revealed its 40 album Long List.

The Long List is where Polaris reveals the 40 nominated albums that will be considered for a given year’s Prize. This year’s Long List is presented by Canada Council for the Arts.

The Polaris Music Prize Short List revealing the 10 finalist albums being considered for this year’s Prize will be unveiled on July 11. More details on this will be announced in the coming weeks.

The winning album will be revealed during the Polaris Gala, taking place Tuesday, September 17 at Massey Hall in Toronto. This will be the second year the Polaris Gala will be taking place at the iconic 130-year-old Massey Hall, Canada’s marquee live venue. Tickets to the Polaris Gala are on sale now via the Massey Hall website.

The Polaris Music Prize awards $50,000 courtesy of Slaight Family Foundation, going to the artist who creates the Canadian Album of the Year, judged solely on artistic merit, without consideration for genre or record sales.

Glenn Marais to Represent the Grand River Blues Society in the International Blues Challenge

Newmarket's Glenn Marais is going to Memphis to represent the Grand River Blues Society, He won the Road to Memphis Competition (Solo/Duo category) on Sunday, June 9, 2024 at the Brantford Polish Hall. His group, the Mojo Train went to Memphis last year to compete in the Band contest.

Ensemble! Wins 2024 Cable 14 Impact Award

Ensemble! the wonderful Cable 14 music TV show recently received some well-deserved recognition. The program won in the Outstanding Social Media Promotion category at the 2024 Impact Awards that first aired on June 11, 2024. The program was also nominated for Outstanding Entertainment Series.  Ensemble, created/produced by HBL's Linda Fraser and hosted by the incredible Dave Rave has been entertaining audiences for over a decade.

The live event itself took place at the Westdale in Hamilton on May 28, 2024.

Below you can see the full ceremony. Presenters included musician Tom Wilson, Mayor Andrea Horvath, former CHCH personality Connie Smith & many more.

Pet owners who cannot afford medical care for their sick or injured pet, and who fall into one of the categories below, are encouraged to talk to their veterinarian about the availability of Farley Foundation funding.

Cambridge, ON celebrated their arts & culture on May 23, 2024 during the Bernice Adams Legacy Awards Night. Named for the City Councillor Bernice Adams, who assed away in 1980, the event featured a mix of winners from the artistic community.

Today (June 3, 2024) would have been American Blues legend Jimmy Rogers' 100th birthday.

Biographic Highlights (From Wikipedia)

  • Born James Arthur Lane in New Ruleville, Mississippi (June 3, 1924)
  • Recorded as a harmonica player and singer for the Harlem record label (1946)
  • Joined the Muddy Waters band (1947)
  • Recorded That's Alright as a solo performer on Chess Records (1950)
  • Worked briefly with Howling Wolf (1960's)
  • First album (compilation of Chess recordings): Chicago Bound (1970)
  • Inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame (1995)
  • Passed away on December 19, 1997
