Consummate Rock Drummer Greg "Fritz" Hinz (Helix & Starchild) Passes

It is with sadness that we announce the passing of drummer Greg "Fritz" Hinz on February 16, 2024. Our condolences to his family, friends and fans.

Greg lived in Brantford for a while and was a member of Kitchener Metal Icons Helix and of Cambridge's Starchild. He'd been with Helix on and off for years and was with the group until very recently.

From Helix frontman Brian Vollmer on the Helix Facebook Page

Fritz was like a brother to myself, Brent, Kenny, and many other people who worked for the band.   Traci has asked me to write something to post.  I could go on for hours about the guy, but right now I’m devastated, as are the other guys in the band.  We’ve known about this since last April, but were unable to tell anyone, at Fritz’s request.  He wanted his privacy through this.  He was a proud guy and tough as f**k.  When he fell off the ladder a couple of years ago and nearly died, I thought that was the end there.  Fritz surprised everyone by coming back less than 8 months later for gigs in Vancouver & Calgary in one weekend. This meant lots of driving and flying-something that’s extremely bad for someone who has suffered a major concussion.  He played great that weekend and didn’t complain.  Many months later he told me that at the end of the Vancouver show at the Hard Rock, he nearly stood up and fell forward through his drums at the end of the show ‘cos he had vertigo so bad.

Like I said, “One tough guy.”

I met Fritz way back around the late 70’s when he played for the Cambridge based hard rock band STARCHILD.  We both used to laugh over the fact that’s Fritz’s big part on the STARCHILD record "Children of the Stars" was in the song Johnny Groover.

The line in the song went  “...here comes Johnny Groover in his Vet-he’s got to get it wet…” to which Fritz would then add a squirting sound: Pht-t-t–t–t-h!...”

Fritz was the funniest guy you’d ever want to meet.  We could be in the seriousest of situations and he could say something and everyone would burst out laughing.  He had that kind of personality everyone wanted to be around. Add to that his ability to attract scores of women at our gigs.  Fritz was Helix’s “David Lee Roth.”

The most frequent question asked by girls outside the buses on the Quiot Riot/Whitesnake Tour in 1984 was, “Do you know where your drummer is???”

As a result, Fritz was frequently in “movies” as he called them.  This meant that one of his relationships had gone sideways and was becoming a soap opera.  The funny thing was that no matter how much he would piss off the girl, they would always forgive him, come back, and shower him with gifts.

Fritz was the consummate rock drummer: It was his craft.   He prided himself in his playing, and well he should have.  He had a style all his own.  Check out the bridge to the chorus in Heavy Metal Love.  Such a simple lick-playing on the off time, but Fritz learned that playing his first instrument-the accordion-in an “oom-pah-pah” band.

As I was telling Jamie on the phone today:  “The public has no idea the sacrifices that musicians make for their craft.   You think of the music business as be a fairly low-impact kind of job.  In reality, you give up your personal life, your financial life, any type of regularity in your life, and…not to mention the physical scars.  I’ve yet to meet a drummer who hasn’t ripped his rotator cuff.  Guys with guitars and basses-ditto.  We’ve stayed in the coldest rooms, the hottest rooms, gone without sleep, and made shit money.  All for this thing called “making music.”

Fritz definitely did that.  He loved his drums and he loved drumming and performing.  He took great pride in everything he did.  I’m going to miss him so much.

My heart is breaking now.  Gotta go.

Lee Aaron

So, so saddened to hear about the passing of Greg Hinz (Fritz) from Helix The Band . He was a rock solid drummer, a sweet, charismatic and very funny person, and a beloved pal all around from the Canadian Music scene. We crossed paths on many stages and at many airports over the years. My heart goes out to his band mates and loved ones today.

Kitchener's Adam Buschlen Contributed Immeasurably to the Music Community. RIP

It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Kitchener musician Adam Buschlen on February 10, 2024. Our condolences to his family, friends & fans. Adam was a talented solo artist, studio musician, instructor, bassist, guitarist and singer-songwriter.

From his obituary:

With great sadness we announce that Adam passed away unexpectedly at Quinte Health North Hastings Hospital on Saturday, February 10, 2024 at the age of 50.

Beloved husband of Renata Valaitis. Proud and devoted father of Liam, Shona, and Edward. Cherished son of Donna and the late David, and son-in-law of Ruta and Vytas Valaitis. Dear brother of Jeff (Tammy) and Joanne (Eric Clarkson). Beloved brother-in-law to Krista and Steve. Proud uncle of Adam (and Elizabeth), Zac (and Amy), Ben (and Wes), Laura, Nick (and Amy), Corey (and Maria), Mila, Hannah, and great-uncle to Jax and Miles. Will also be sadly missed by many uncles, aunts, and cousins.

Adam's contributions to the KW music community and beyond were immeasurable as an educator and professional musician. He was loved by his students, fellow musicians, and everyone who had the privilege of knowing him.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or the Community Music School of Waterloo Region would be appreciated.

I’m so grateful to have known your sweet soul and called you friend, Adam. Thank you for opening your heart to us and showing us the meaning of kindness, love and family. I’ll carry with me the special memories, the beautiful music and the joy, light and laughter you so freely gave to everyone.

We shared a love of Tom Petty and I always loved singing Walls with you, it always felt like singin’ with a brother, like you had my back. Love you Busch ❤️

“Cause you got a heart so big it could crush this town and I can’t hold out forever even walls fall down”

Sean O'Grady (drummer)

On Saturday we lost a beautiful character named Adam Buschlen. When I say character, I don’t mean to minimize him as a man, but there was just no one like him, and he was the embodiment of the expression, “To know him, was to love him.”

Adam played the bass and sang. I got to play with him many times over the years in different bands and always loved it. He thought outside the box with a bass in his hands and he could get away with some adventurous voyages up and down the neck that would always leave me inspired and marvelling at how he had just gotten away with it. Sometimes I think he was just as surprised as I was.

He was a proud and devoted father, loved his beautiful wife Renate, and in the middle of a busy, hectic life, he just decided to enroll in university and study classical music and the upright bass. I couldn’t wait to pepper him with questions about what he was studying and he was only too glad to talk about it. His eyes would widen into saucers as he wondered if he could handle the course load and the expectations – which he always did.

Adam loved to laugh and getting him riled up was effortless. He loved grabbing a beer,

( “Sean it doesn’t make us bad guys.”), catching up at the bar, and talking about Paul Chambers or whoever he was checking out at the time. Locally he was a massive fan of bass players like Steve Hogg and Paul Intson. At a party a few months ago, I dragged him over to talk to Paul and he was like a kid who couldn’t believe he was hanging with Batman or The Terminator.

Here’s the part nobody gets. Years before the university adventure, he studied martial arts and got a black belt in karate. As a result he was healthy as a horse and strong as two oxen! I never knew that he was fighting cancer, but if I HAD known, I wouldn’t have been worried because Adam was a walking brick. Hugging him was like wrestling granite.

Adam was a light. A bright, unpretentious, humble, mischievous light that I never imagined would stop shining so soon. I’ve been thinking about him ever since I found out on Sunday morning and it was such a shock, that the weight of his loss hasn’t totally hit me yet.

Rest In Peace brother. The world owes you nothing because you single handedly made it a better place.

Sammy Duke

No words to describe the loss of Adam Buschlen. An absolute pillar of local music, and an even better human being.

Rest in peace, Bush-league. You'll be fondly remembered, Bro.

Mark Chewter, Early Member of the Forgotten Rebels, Passes

It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Mark Chewter, an early member of the legendary Hamilton Punk Band, the Forgotten Rebels on January 30, 2024. Our condolences to his family, friends and fans.

His obituary:
Our family sadly shares that Mark Edward Chewter, 72, passed away peacefully on January 30, 2024, at St. Peter's Hospital. His sister, Michelle, was by his side. He joins his parents, Gordon and Marjorie (née Smith), and brothers, Brian and David. He will be dearly missed by his sister, Michelle (Tony), sister-in-law, Kim, five nieces, Sophie, Lauren, Marley, Erin, and Allison, as well as his six sweet great-nephews, and his close friend Ann.
Many friends visited with Mark in his final days, and our family felt the love. Mark enjoyed great discussions; being well read (with the book collection to prove it!), he was a fountain of interesting information.
He demonstrated lifelong passions for nature and music of all kinds. His talent as a guitarist (Forgotten Rebels, 1980-81) expressed the immense creativity of his spirit. Retired from his plastering career with C. Chewter & Son, Mark leaves a legacy of work completed in many of Hamilton's residences and historical buildings.
We wish to thank the wonderful staff at St. Peter's, especially Matthew and Chaplain Femke, for their kind words, gentle caring, and memorable hugs. Friends are invited to join us and share their memories at an informal reception on Saturday, February 24, 2024, from 1 p.m. - 4 p.m. at Circle of Life Cremation and Burial Centre, 100 King St. E., Dundas, ON (additional parking at the Air Force Club). Memorial donations to the Royal Botanical Gardens and The Orchid Society. Private family interment. Cremation has taken place.

Sad to hear that my friend, Mark Chewter has passed away at St Peter’s hospice. Mark excelled at whatever he chose to  do whether it be growing orchids, cross country skiing, a highly skilled plasterer, a biker traversing North America or fine guitar player. May he rest in peace and condolences to his friends and family.

Mickey DeSadist (Forgotten Rebels)

My Friend and past member of the Forgotten Rebels has passed away. Mark is the man on Guitar on the far left in this concert pic. May he Rest in Peace. Chris Houston told me last night and I am still shaken.

Though he never recorded with the Forgotten Rebels, Mark helped compose the song Memory Lane from the This Ain't Hollywood album
