New Amalgamated Muck CD (featuring Lauren Agnelli): The New Leisure Class

Amalgamated Muck, a Connecticut band that features ex-Hamiltonian Lauren Agnelli on vocals and various instruments, recently unleashed an incredible new CD, The New Leisure Class (through Good Sponge Records).

The disc is jam-packed with old-fashioned, lively, acoustic, country folk goodness. It'll get your toes a tappin' and your hips a shakin'.

This album boasts a number of great covers (Dylan's Spanish Harlem Incident, Woody Guthrie's Hobo's Lullaby, the traditional Shady Grove, and more) and superb originals. The one contant is the amazing vocals (what great harmonies!) and musical talent of the group.

Hamilton's Dave Rave also adds some vocals to the mix as well as some co-writing and producing.

The album is available through cdbaby (as a physical CD or download). It can also be downloaded through Bandcamp and iTunes.

New Martha's Trouble Children's CD: A Little Heart Like You

If you're tired of the same old boring kid's lullaby CDs you may wanna check out, A Little Heart Like You, the latest CD from American duo Martha's Trouble (featuring former Ancaster resident Jen Slocumb)

Every song has an indie-folk vibe that sets it apart from all the other cookie cutter children's discs. Such kid's classics as You Are My Sunshine, Hush Little Baby, Jesus Loves Me and more are given an amazing unique twist. On top of that, Martha's Trouble include a few wonderful original tunes as well.

Grown ups will enjoy this also. While the music is simpler, the sonic craftsmanship is top notch and extremely enjoyable.

The CD is available at their live shows and through their bandcamp site (where it can also be purchased as a download). You can also download it on iTunes and eMusic,

Below is a live performance of one of the songs.

New Guitar Mikey and the Real Thing CD: Out of the Box

Hamilton's Guitar Mikey now lives near the legendary crossroads in Clarksdale, Mississippi but you can hear Mikey's Steeltown roots on his latest CD (with The Real Thing), Out of the Box (available through Chicago's Earwig Music)

In a nice touch, the CD is dedicated to the musician's former mentor, the legendary Hamiltonian King Biscuit Boy. Former KBB bassist Doug Carter co-wrote a few numbers on the disc as well.

Biscuit Boy would be proud of this disc, which is jam-packed with real, down home, straight ahead rockin' blues. This is wonderful working man's boogie.

He doesn't just stay with the 12-bar blues format though. As the album title suggests, the music (which Mikey describes as hybrid blues) pushes the envelope but still has that groovy, funky swagger.

As a special treat, former Muddy Waters guitarist Bob Margolin joins Mikey and his great band on The Bigger Fool.

The CD is available at his live shows and through his web-site. You can also pick them up at Dr. Disc.

Below is a recent live performance of a song from the CD. Click here for more footage of this show. Click here for more of Guitar Mikey's part of the show.

New Steve Strongman Acoustic CD: A Natural Fact

Steve Strongman is known around the world for his high powered, high energy electric guitar sound.  For his latest CD, A Natural Fact, this Hamilton boy's decided to show that he's equally adept with an acoustic guitar.

This ain't no collection of slow, introspective, ballads though.  The stripped down feel allows his great voice to show off it's energy and power (especially on Haven't Seen It Yet and The Mood).  Plus, the boogie he's always had is still here.

Steve also takes advantage of the acoustic format to explore some older blues vibes on a few numbers (while still maintaining a foot in the present). You can hear this from the quasi-gospel sound of I Forgot, to the jazzy, old-timey Full of You, and the rawness of Just One Thing

Though a few tunes are just Steve and his guitar (as well as harmonica), he had a few musical pals to keep him company:  Jesse O'Brien, Alec Fraser, Rob Szabo (who also produced the CD), Dave King, and Suzie Vinnick (who duets with him on Leaving).

The CD is available at his live shows and as a download on iTunes.

New Brennagh Burns CD

Singer/Songwriter Brennagh Burns's latest CD is called Raw and that describes the marvellous music on this disc to a T. Most of the songs feature only vocals, acoustic guitar and a djembe drum. As a result, the sound is as honest and real as you get.

This stripped down affair works well as it helps bring out Brennagh's outstanding, expressive vocals. She also blends in great guitar work and talented songwriting.

Chad Brown joins her on the aforementioned djembe (with Zander Lamothe filling in on a track) and Rob Lamothe adds his electric guitar on one tune as well.

So if you like your music organic and authentic pick up the CD at Brennagh's live shows.

Below are two live performances of tracks from the disc. Click here for the rest of the same show.

New Cindy Dell CD: Gathering Tales

Gathering Tales, the latest CD from singer/songwriter Cindy Dell, has the perfect title. A collection of stories is exactly what this disc is.

Each lyric paints a different tale. From carefree fun (Fishing Song), social commentary (Glory Daze), love (Lonely Boy Timid Girl), history (For As Long as the River Flows) and much more. Cindy's words offer great emotional resonance to every topic.

The variety of the music also mirrors the lyrics. Each tune has its own sonic soul. The songstress herself sings (and what an amazing voice), plays guitar, violin, harmonica and much more. Amy Di Nino (Wark) beautifully plays drums and other percussive instruments. David E. Campbell supplies the wonderful guitars.

The CD is available at her live shows.

Below are two videos from her recent CD Release Party. We'll be posting more from this show soon.
