New Fred Eaglesmith CD is Evocative and Gripping

There's nothing quite like a Fred Eaglesmith album. Fred's a master Americana storyteller whose voice echoes with feeling. His latest disc, Standard continues that tradition with a sparse, beautiful sound.

As always, Fred and the band mix traditional country music with a folk sensibility and fabulous lyrics. His voice is a little more prominent in the mix than usual and it's used to the fullest effect. The evocative, almost-rough vocals are gripping.

Fred's joined by his impressive, multi-instrumental wife, Tif GinnMatty Simpson (guitar), Justine Fischer (bass), Kori Heppner (drums), and Blue Passalacqua (vocals) also use their immense talents to lend a hand.

Make sure you get a copy of this superb CD.  You can pick one up at any of Fred's unforgettable shows. They're also available at iTunes and amazon.ca

Burlington's Judi Rideout Creates One of the Best Americana CDs Out There!

Ex-Husband, the debut album from Burlington's Judi Rideout is one of the best Americana recordings out there.  It's just the right mix of traditional and modern!

A superb blend of country, blues, folk and more, Judi and the gang know how to merge it all into great tunes.  Judi's voice sets the right mood and fits perfectly into the sound.

Helping with the full-bodied feel of the songs are Mark Foley (electric guitar), Justine Fischer (bass), Steve Bigas (drums, producer), Tom Bigas (percussion), Ron Cole (accordion) and Mary Simon (harmony vocals).   Judi also shows some incredible songwriting skills (including co writes with Mark Foley, Dale Rideout and Fred Eaglesmith). The lady also plays a few amazing tracks written by Jessi Elgersma and Keith Shaw,.

If you catch one of her fabulous live shows, you can pick up the CD.  It's also available Picks and Sticks (Hamilton), Records on Wheels (Dundas) and Circle Game (Port Dover).

2014: Year in Review

2014 turned out to be another great year filled with amazing local music and a few sad moments as well.  This was the year that we partnered up with sponsors to help spread the word about the wonderful music scene.  You can check them out on the right side of our blog.  In 2014, we also started covering a lot more country music and had tons of fun doing it.

Speaking of country, this was definitely the year for St. Catharines good ol' boy Tim Hicks,  Not only did he get a much deserved Juno nomination but he added quite a few awards to his shelf (Canadian Radio Music, CMAO, CCMA, SOCAN, and Top Country).  We reviewed two of his spectacular CD's (Throwdown and 5:01) as well,

Another St. Catharines singer/songwriter, Ron Sexsmith, made many appearances on our pages.  This year he won a Juno, won a Niagara Music Award, was in CBC's top Canadian songs of all time, receieved an honorary degree from Brock and played on a wonderful Jazz tribute CD.

Canadian supergroup Blue Rodeo brought Hamilton guitar master Colin Cripps into the fold and released their first album with him this year.  He turned into quite a good luck charm as the band had a lot happen to them in 2014.  There was a Juno nomination, winning a Governor General's Award, getting on CBC's top Canadian songs list twice and releasing a kick ass Christmas CD.

Blues institution Downchild (whose roster includes a few local players) had quite a banner year as well.  Bassist Gary Kendall won a Maple Blues Award early in the year.  The entire band released a stellar album, Can You Hear the Music?, which won a Juno and a was nominated for both an Indie and a 2015 Maple Blues Award.

On a sadder note, we lost a many talented musicians in 2014.  Hamiltion guitar legend Brian Griffith passed away as did Tava Lesku (aka Tava Tunes), Roy Pongetti, Philip Bast, Jesse Winchester and Andy Grigg.  On the international front the great Johnny Winter, Joe Cocker, Pete SeegerJerry Vale, Phil Everly, Casey Kasum, and Paul Revere of the Raiders also left us this year.

New Fred Eaglesmith CD: Tambourine (HIS 20TH!)

Local music veteran Fred Eaglesmith has reached the incredible milestone of 20 albums with Tambourine. This latest disc is an amazing addition to the singer/songwriter's already impressive work.

The CD is a wonderful musical throwback to the 60s.  Fred peppers the songs with R&B, surf rhythms, soul, psychedelic sounds, gospel and more.  All the while, he still keeps things rooted in the country/Americana realm.  As always, his strong storytelling and lyrics raise it above a mere nostalgia-fest.

Frequent collaborator Scott Merritt co-produces the affair and also plays multiple instruments.  He and Fred have created an old-fashioned record that Fredheads will love.

To check out this great CD, you can pick it up at his live shows or through Fred's web shop.  It can also be downloaded through iTunes and eMusic.
