Sarah Vaughan's 100th Birthday (ft Covers by Chantal Chamberland)
Today (March 27, 2024) would have been American Jazz legend Sarah Vaughan's 100th birthday.
Biographic Highlights (From Wikipedia)
- Born in Newark, New Jersey (March 27, 1924)
- Won top prize at the Apollo Theater Amateur Night contest (1942)
- Started working with Earl Hines' band (April 4, 1943)
- Started solo career in 1945
- Started radio show, Songs by Sarah Vaughan (1949)
- Release first solo album: Sarah Vaughan (1950)
- Received star on Hollywood Walk of Fame (1985)
- Inducted into the American Jazz Hall of Fame (1988)
- Passed away on April 3, 1990
- Album Sarah Vaughan with Clifford Brown and the single If You Could See Me Now inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame (1999)
- Single Tenderly inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame (2019)

New Design Hope CD: A Place in My Heart
Soul, jazz, folk, funk, pop, blues, instrumentals, slow songs, rockers . . .There's something for everyone on A Place in My Heart, the 5th Design Hope Compilation CD. Money raised from the sale of the disc goes towards helping the homeless in Hamilton. A great cause an an amazing album.
Performers include City and the Sea, Kensington Prarie, Fred Magie, Annette Haas, Bob Doidge, Frank Koren, Carter Lancaster, Chris White, Karen Corinth, Mark LaForme, Sharon Musgrave, Danny Lockwood, NLX, Chantal Chamberland, Melissa Bel and Buckshot Bebee. Many of these musicians also play on each other's songs.
Christopher Clause and Amy King produce the album as well as back up a number of the main artists. Also helping out are Mark McIntyre, Colin Lapsley, Brian Griffith, Andrew Aldridge, and more.
Like all of the Design Hope collections, it's a great way to hear new songs from some of the best musicians the local scene has to offer. The CD can be purchased online.

New Open Mind CD + Release Party
To celebrate the 20th anniversary of their debut, the recently reunited Hamilton duo (Chantal Chamberland and Cynthia Kerr), Open Mind released Over Oceans - a wonderful disc of reworked classics and new songs.This is their first recording in 16 years. The title is an apt one as it was recorded across continents (Kerr is now based in Australia) using the latest technology.
The end result isn't cold and mechanical though. Each song has the great pop/folk sound the band was famous for in the 1990s. It runs the gamut from catchy (Why, Open Hands) to soft and sweet (Touch the Water, Wishful Thinking), and everything in between. There are even a few middle eastern and Spanish elements in the mix as well.

Below are videos from the CD release at the Westside Concert Theatre on June 26, 2010. They were joined by Dan Lockwood (drums), Mark McIntyre (bass), Amy King (keyboards), and Bob Doidge (guitar/percussion).
