Throwback Thursday - The Acoustics 'Forever and a Day' Gets Noticed (2009)

Forever and a Day, the instrumental album by Hamilton folk/roots group, the Acoustics, got a bit of notice in 2009

From their blog entry:

It is with great pride and joy to share the news that The Acoustics have just been nominated for a JPF Music Award for World Album of the year 2009, for our CD, 

JPF (Just Plain Folks Music Organization) is a community of over 51,500 Songwriters, Recording Artists and Music Industry Professionals — and host to the world's largest independent music awards

The Acoustics, the only Canadian artists to be nominated in this category. Not bad, eh!!!

Unfortunately we did not win the award for World Album of the year. However for what it’s worth we came in 2nd place! Second out of ten nominees is not bad.

New Album From Port Dover's Tia McGraff Packed with Excitement and Wonder

Possessing one of the most expressive voices in Country Music, Tia McGraff is at her peak on her newest album, Crazy Beautiful.  With songs that blur the lines between Pop-Folk and Alt-Country, it wonderfully mixes both into a beautiful sound.

It contains a well-balanced collection of rockin' hooks, mid-tempo foot tappers and tender ballads.  The excitement and wonder just oozes out of the speakers.

A few local and international musicians join in. Tommy Parham, Dave Sanger of Asleep At The Wheel, Tommy Harden, Dave Labruyere.Andrew Aldridge, Alfonso Spoto of the Acoustics, Mary-Jane Russell and Jonathan Edwards are all out in full force.  It's all engineers by the legendary Nick Blagona.

2010's Diversity boats a number of amazing storytelling songs enhanced by her distinct vocals.  Lyrically, it veers from politics, love, motivation and all points in between.  This is a wonderful album!

New Acoustics CD: Erie Long

Talented local band the Acoustics have made a giant leap forward with Erie Long, their latest CD.  Known as a top-notch instrumental group with a world-music sound, they've challenged themselves to explore new territory.

By far, the biggest change has to be the addition of vocals on 8 of the 14 tracks.  Guitarist Enzo Spoto stepped up to the mic and proved he possesses an incredible voice and some major songwriting skills. There's also new elements of folk, rock, pop and more added to the proceedings.

Don't worry, the Mediterranean-style music you know and love is still here, especially on the instrumental tracks. The high-energy, danceable, party vibe still lingers too!

The CD can be purchased at their live shows and cdBaby, it can also be downloaded through cdBaby and iTunes.

New Wilson Family Forgery CD

The packaging of the new self-titled CD from Hamilton-formed Wilson Family Forgery reflects the music inside: it's something just a little different (The disc comes in a nice-looking, artistic, lyric mini-book).

The music itself is a wonderful, unique blend of indie-rock, gospel, folk, with flashes of funk (Someday, If Hamilton Were a Woman), jazz (Juniper Brine), blues (Sanatorium Road) and country (Emily). Sometimes, these different elements are within in the same song.

Local singer/guitarist Thomas Wilson's poetic lyrics and raw vocals add an otherworldy charm to the recordings. There's also a bit of whimsy in some of the great tunes, especially If Hamilton Were a Woman.

Thomas and his wife violinist/singer Sarah Stewart-Krocker are the core of the band. On the CD, the duo is joined by Peter Stewart–Kroeker (guitar), Miriam Stewart–Kroeker (cello), Archibald (from the Petit Fours) (piano), Andrew Eckart (from the Acoustics) (bass), Adrian Macfarlane (drums) and Randell Neudorf (aka 2x the Mono) (organ, producer)

The Wilson Family Forgery is now based in New Jersey so their visits to Hamilton are rare. You may want to purchase the disc at their web site or download the music on iTunes.
