Throwback Thursday: News Roundup ft Pepper Jack Cafe Closing, Voyageur Guitar, Jacob Moon

Original post: May 20, 2009
Updated: November 6, 2025

After eight years, the Pepper Jack Cafe will be closing it's doors for good. It has played host to many great gigs with local and international talent. The PJC will be missed.

Ken Inouye sent the following e-mail message to members of the Pepper Jack Facebook Group (no longer available):

It's been 8 wonderful years of music, food and friends but also 8 years of very hard work. A bit too much hard work to continue on past June when our lease is up.

I'd like to thank you ever so much for all your support of our club and your support of live music in general over all these years. No doubt there are some truly great people who make it fun to throw shows for and with in Hamilton.. Who knew? We've had "maybe" one "fight" in the entire 8 years we've been in downtown Hamilton. I really can't stress enough how great the crowds have been. I've especially admired anyone who's done the research, spotted something interesting and been brave enough to attend a show even if they could not find a buddy or crew to go with.

While I'm at it I'd also like to comment on the abundance of good music coming thru Hamilton. Even when we are gone, many great bands will of course still be coming by the other live music clubs in this city. Not to mention the abundance of talent that this city has in it's own citizens. Please remember that when you go to a show, on top of the potential to have a fun and rich experience, you are also casting your vote and approval to the promoter and/or band to continue coming back and playing Hamilton.

The more support the clubs get, the more chances for unique and interesting entertainment to continue flowing and staying in the city.

Also, rest assured that there are clubs in Hamilton that do consistently book the up and coming buzz bands that go on to play much bigger, less intimate venues for way more money.

There are still almost 2 months of quality shows coming your way from PJC as well as some gems yet to be announced!

Thanks for your support and for being so cool!

Sincerely,
Ken

Journalist Mark McNeil wrote an interesting true tale in the Thursday, May 7,  2009 edition of the Spectator.

It was all about a guitar (dubbed "Voyageur") built of 63 pieces of Canadian history.

Here are some highlights:
CBC Radio Broadcaster Jowi Taylor helped create the guitar and is travelling Canada with it. On Wednesday, May 6, 2029 it was brought to Westdale Secondary School where students and the teacher played the fabulous instrument.

Plans are underway for a book about the guitar and the Canadian Mint recently issued a coin celebrating it.

Click here for the guitar's blog/web-site.

Jacob Moon has recently released a YouTube video on the making of his new six-song EP, Maybe Sunshine. The disc was released in the fall of 2009.

From Jacob's site:
"I have been writing some new songs, and trying them out on unsuspecting audiences, slipping them into sets like some kind of mad scientist, to see how they react.

What I'm hoping to achieve this summer is something I've rarely tried: compose parts of songs, then record them and finish the lyric and melody as I go, reacting to studio musicians' interpretation.

All of this in an attempt to uncover something about the songs that I would be unable to do on my own. First up is something to get me into that headspace again: a band version of The Great Beyond, for an upcoming animated video I've partially commissioned from local animator Rachel Peters. I intend to make that video part of a half dozen new videos that will debut this fall."

Hamilton-Born and St. Catharines Raised Rush Drummer, Neil Peart Passes

One of the world's biggest rock legends, Rush drummer Neil Peart passed away on Tuesday January 2, 2020 after a brain cancer diagnosis. Neil, who was born in Hamilton and also grew up in St. Catharines, was an integral part of one of Canada's (and the world's) most popular bands. Their influence is immeasurable.

Our condolences to his family, friends and fans.

Rush placed the statement below on their website.

Jacob Moon, who performed for the band's induction into the Canadian Songwriters' Hall of Fame, posted a tribute video. Click here to view it. He also posted a statement:
I am shocked, as is the whole musical world, by the sudden and tragic passing of Neil Peart, surely one of our most precious national treasures. His gifts on his instrument are unmatched. His way with words illuminated the human condition in artful and insightful ways.
We will all be poorer for his absence, myself included...We do well to heed his words, and to savor the life we have while we have it.
'Freeze this moment a little bit longer/Make each sensation a little bit stronger' - Neil Peart
Rest well, professor.
Local Media
Many other local musicians took to social media to honour the music legend.

Spider Costello
A HUGE influence on me, not only as a drummer, but his lyrics as well, which spoke to my personal experience as a small-town outsider and inspired me to broaden my literary horizons. A terrible, terrible loss.
Steve Parton
Oh no. The world's most beloved drummer has just died. Neil Peart from Rush is gone at age 67. His lyrics and his drumming made me weep, as I am weeping now. He was my favourite drummer, my favourite lyricist.
Dan McKinnon
I remember seeing Rush on their Vapour Trails tour at the Molson Amphitheatre, their first Toronto show after their hiatus in the 90's. One of the highlight's from that show was Neil's drum solo, which went something like this....
Here's to one of the greatest who ever stepped behind a kit!
Bill Majoros (The Foreign Fims)
As a Canadian kid learning to play drums & guitar it was a "right of passage" to learn Rush songs. Tom Sawyer, YYZ, Spirit of the Radio etc Thanks to Mr Peart for epic inspiration.
May your magnificent creative spirit live on in those wonderful, super-duper complex drum beats!

Hamilton's Jacob Moon and Niagara's Joel Parisien (The Commissionaires) Team Up for Electrifying, Soulful Album

Hamilton's Jacob Moon and Niagara's Joel Parisien have combined their considerable talents in an amazing new project: The Commissionaires.  Shelter Me, their electrifying debut album, is the result of this incredible melding.

Packed full of spiritual and soulful cover songs, the recording proves without a doubt that they make a superb duo. With unbelievable harmonies, good old-fashioned rock and some gospel thrown in, Shelter Me is a wondrous musical showcase. The two do justice to songs originally performed by Buddy and Julie Miller, Ben Harper, Ray Charles, Stevie Wonder, Jonny Lang and more.

They have an amazing team behind them as well: Richard Moore (bass), Mark McIntyre (bass), Lyle Mozan (drums), Joey Landreth (slide guitar, backing vocals), Chantal Williams (vocals), Quisha Wint (backing vocals) and Robyn Pauhl (backing vocals).

You can grab a copy of the CD at any of their solo/group live shows. It's also available through Jacob's online shop, the band's online shop or cdbaby.

    Kitchener's Paul MacLeod Passes

It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Kitchener singer/songwriter Paul MacLeod. He was an accomplished performer in his own right as well as a member of the Skydiggers and Hibakusha.

Click here for the Waterloo Record story

Below are a few social media reactions:

    Kent MacMillan:

I used to watch Paul playing his ass off at the Jazz in Guelph on my free nights and then feeling obligated to go home and pick up a guitar. I always felt that if I just practiced just a little bit more, then maybe someday, just someday I could be half as good a singer and guitarist. He constantly inspired me to be a better musician and I remember always being nervous singing and playing around him, because of how much I looked up to him as a musician. I am still inspired to practice every week because of Paul. I can't believe your not out there on a stage tonight brother...RIP my friend.

We've lost a true artist, and I've lost friend that I've had since high school, and one that gave me the mentoring that I needed to begin my journey as a musician. Rest in peace, Paul MacLeod.

    Sean Stokholm:

More than a few memories of Paul MacLeod being so damned nice to me. So supportive, and not in the obligatory "nice set!" thing musicians do for each other by rote. He was a deeply caring man.
