Unforgettable Tracks on New SG Sinnicks EP


It's been a while since we've heard new studio recordings from veteran Hamilton artist SG (Steve) Sinnicks. Thankfully, his newest wonderful EP, Fridge Magnet breaks that silence! Listeners (and fridges) will be all the better for it.

SG's a talented musician and this new collection is a must for fans of singer/songwriters who can craft a song the old-fashioned way. Every tune tells a tale with impact, With his trademark wit and great lyricism, SG fashions six unforgettable tracks. The physical CD also comes with a free fridge magnet as an extra bonus!

A number of great musicians help out on the EP: Carl Jennings (Freedom Train) on bass, Randall Hill on mandolin, Mike Boguski (Blue Rodeo) on keyboards, and Bill Majoros and Steve Petrie (Blind River Band) on guitars.

You can purchase the CD (and fridge magnet) at SG's live shows or through his online shop. It also be downloaded on Apple Music or streamed through  YouTube and Spotify.

GOOD LUCK! 2021 Hamilton Arts Awards Short List


From the Hamilton Arts Awards website:

Congratulations to the shortlisted 2021Arts Awards nominees! These remarkable local artists, arts collectives, arts community leaders and volunteers have been named to the 2021 City of Hamilton Arts Awards Short List in three categories:

Lifetime Achievement Award: Recognizes those who have contributed substantially to the artistic vitality of the city over the course of a career

Arts Champion Award: Honours the work of arts sector volunteers, advocates, or board members who are essential in supporting success in the arts community.

Creator Award: Conferred to individual artists and artistic collectives (including bands) working in any artistic discipline and at any career level.

A panel of 45 local artists and arts professionals evaluated 122 public nominations for the 2021 Arts Awards, shortlisting 37 nominees to move forward for final adjudication for an award. 

Award recipients in all categories will be announced via an online presentation during Hamilton Arts Week (June 3 to 12, 2021).

Hamilton-Born and St. Catharines Raised Rush Drummer, Neil Peart Passes


One of the world's biggest rock legends, Rush drummer Neil Peart passed away on Tuesday January 2, 2020 after a brain cancer diagnosis. Neil, who was born in Hamilton and also grew up in St. Catharines, was an integral part of one of Canada's (and the world's) most popular bands. Their influence is immeasurable.

Our condolences to his family, friends and fans.

Rush placed the statement below on their website.

Jacob Moon, who performed for the band's induction into the Canadian Songwriters' Hall of Fame, posted a tribute video. Click here to view it. He also posted a statement: 
I am shocked, as is the whole musical world, by the sudden and tragic passing of Neil Peart, surely one of our most precious national treasures. His gifts on his instrument are unmatched. His way with words illuminated the human condition in artful and insightful ways.
We will all be poorer for his absence, myself included...We do well to heed his words, and to savor the life we have while we have it.

A HUGE influence on me, not only as a drummer, but his lyrics as well, which spoke to my personal experience as a small-town outsider and inspired me to broaden my literary horizons. A terrible, terrible loss.
Steve Parton
Oh no. The world's most beloved drummer has just died. Neil Peart from Rush is gone at age 67. His lyrics and his drumming made me weep, as I am weeping now. He was my favourite drummer, my favourite lyricist.
Dan McKinnon
I remember seeing Rush on their Vapour Trails tour at the Molson Amphitheatre, their first Toronto show after their hiatus in the 90's. One of the highlight's from that show was Neil's drum solo, which went something like this.... 
Here's to one of the greatest who ever stepped behind a kit!

As a Canadian kid learning to play drums & guitar it was a "right of passage" to learn Rush songs. Tom Sawyer, YYZ, Spirit of the Radio etc Thanks to Mr Peart for epic inspiration.
May your magnificent creative spirit live on in those wonderful, super-duper complex drum beats!

GOOD LUCK! 2018 Hamilton Arts Award Nominees


Over 75 artists have been nominated in the 2018 City of Hamilton Arts Awards, including a number in the Music category.

From the arts award site:
The Awards Presentation will take place on Wednesday June 6, 2018 at Theatre Aquarius Dofasco Centre for the Arts as part of Hamilton Arts Week. The catered presentation event will feature great performers, art demonstrations, and the awarding of $35,000 in cash prizes to artists.

                              Hamilton's Amber Edgar Stirs the Senses With "Good Will Rise'


                              Exquisitely layered and emotive, Good Will Rise, the four song EP from Hamilton singer/songwriter, Amber Edgar, will stir the senses.  Lyrically and musically, the recording's very well-crafted and inspiring.

                              With an almost cinematic flair, each alt-folk/pop tune paints a mental picture of mourning, loss and redemption.  Though sometimes dark, Amber manages to inject the songs with a bit hope and meaning as well.

                              Helping along the way are Adam Bentley and Anna Jarvis (formerly of The Rest), Bill Majoros of Foreign Films, Troy Dowding, Karijn DeJong, Kori Pop, and Jordon Mitchell.  They make amazing contributions to the stunning density and artistry of the sound.

                              Amber released the Honey and Sorrow single in 2013.  Both the main song and the "B-Side" Troubles, are infectious numbers featuring her wonderful lyrics.  It's available via Bandcamp.

                              New Marie Avery EP: The Fire

                              The Fire, the latest EP from local singer/songwriter Marie Avery is ignited by the artist's striking voice. Her accomplished piano work also adds fuel to the flame.

                              Though this blazing EP has an indie-pop ambiance, Marie still grounds it with solid, poetic songwriting and classic structure.  You can also hear a lot of jazz and a bit of broadway in the mix  What comes through is a beautiful, honest recording full of surprises.

                              Backing her up is a great team of area musicians, including Bill Majoros (Foreign Films) and Carl Jennings (Freedom Train) - both of whom produced the EP.  Kori Pop, Amber Edgar and Loretta Hale  (Loretta Hale Big Band, J-Tones) join in as well.
