Janis Joplin's 'Pearl' (ft Local Musicians) Turns 50 + Local Covers

Pearl, the final studio album from the unforgettable icon Janis Joplin was released 50 years ago this year. It was released January 11, 1971 - three months after her untimely death.

The legendary singer was backed up on the recording by the Full Tilt Boogie Band, an incredible group that featured area members like Ken Pearson on organ (Woodstock, ON) and Brad Campbell on bass (Milton). Rounding out the gang were Canadians John Till on guitar (Ronnie Hawkins and Janis' previous group, Kozmic Blues Band)and Richard Bell  (Ronnie Hawkinsthe Band). Clark
Pierson was the American drummer.

Here are a few local acts covering the amazing song from this timeless album.

Peggy Lee's 100th Birthday

Today (Tuesday, May 26, 2020) would have been American singer, songwriter and actress Peggy Lee's 100th birthday.

Biography highlights:
Juliet Dunn and Peter Shea and celebrated the occasion with a wonderful live Facebook performance.

We asked a few local artists to give their thoughts on the legendary singer. We will add more soon.

Brenda Brown
Peggy Lee was a beautiful communicator and a sophisticated powerhouse of a woman. Not only a gifted singer songwriter but also an actor, artist, entrepreneur and advocate for the arts. What a gift to us!
Karen Thornton
Her music was played in our home growing up. Understated sultry tone and phrasing no vocal aerobics, just a great quality to her voice and she really knew how to sell her songs.
Hailee Rose
Peggy Lee was, and still is, one of Jazz’s most inspirational female artists. Her song “Fever” introduced me to the art of simple yet captivating storytelling; painting a picture with words, and driving emotion with a minimalist sound.  A truly beautiful artist.
Chris Ayries
If I had a coffee house, Peggy Lee would be in the top 10 on my playlist. Her sound is classic and soothing.
Here are a few videos from the lady herself.

We asked local singers to comment on her unforgettable career. We may add more as we get them.

Donna Panchezak (Trickbag)
Aretha Franklin was a tremendous inspiration to myself and many aspiring female vocalists. Her ability to immerse herself in a song so that when she sang and performed on piano, the true essence of her soul and humanity emanated was unsurpassed. She was able to connect with her audience on a spiritual level and although her physical presence has been lost her essence lives on forever...God Bless the one and only, "Queen of Soul"!
Cheryl Lescom
She embodies the word soul. No other woman could sing like that. She raised the bar for all vocalists.
Sue Leonard
Right Now I have no words to express what she meant to me .... no words at all ... I keep posting and reposting other peoples comments video clips because I am taken aback by the enormity of her talent and what a Hole there is in the universe ... there will be no one like her ever ... there has never been anyone like her ... she was a musical genius, spirit of God who knew and understood her gift more than anyone in the universe and shared it with us all without judgement .... my heavens ... RIP Aretha Franklin YES Queen OF SOUL

News Roundup (Tom Petty, Purple Helmet, Shjaane Glover, Colin Cripps)

        Local social media reaction:

Dave Rave: RIP. Always an inspiration to me. This is truly sad news

Lou Molinaro: Thinking about some of the TOM PETTY shows that I saw and one of the more memorable ones was the early September show 1989 at the Kingswood Theatre in Canada's Wonderland. THE REPLACEMENTS opened up.

Tyler Schwende: Beyond sad news about rock icon Tom Petty. I will always remember his famous saying 'Don't bore us - get to the chorus!' Thank you Tom for all the amazing songs and of course fabulous hooks that inspired me as an artist and thousands of others. Your music will not be forgotten.
