The Vaudevillian Revels in Fabulous, Raw Pre-War Blues on New Album!


Hamilton (formerly of Kitchener) duo, The Vaudevillian continue with their fabulous, raw pre-war blues sound on Salty Dog, their current album.  Banjos, kazoos and washboards revel with fiddles, accordions and ukes with great abandon.

The Hamilton Music Award Nominated recording is loaded with good time energy and you can't help but feel the ethereal spirit of punk in the mix.  The six stunning originals and three marvelous covers take you to the ancient bayous!

Brendan J Stephens and Willow Walker are the two main revelers in the Vaudevillian.  On this album, they're joined by Minnie Hart and Buck Thompson of Ever Lovin' Jug Band as well as Jojo Worthington.

Some albums escape our radar, so occasionally we'll be catching up with some mini-reviews!


Vaudevillian's 2013 release Bourbon and Basements is a more stripped down affair but the rawness of it works extremely well.  Brendan's urgent vocals give everything such amazing power.  The album can be loaded through Bandcamp as well.

Waterloo Songstress JoJo Worthington's 7 is A Full Musical Experience!


There are two things you'll be thinking about right away when you listen to 7, the latest album from Waterloo songstress JoJo Worthington: What a voice and she can really rock the ukulele!  The lady's gotten a lot of notice lately thanks to her recent Acoustic Music and Toronto Indie Awards.  This recording will certainly help give her some more well-deserved recognition.

From enchanting, sparse vocals and uke numbers to fully produced multi-instrumental epics, you'll get a full musical experience from JoJo.  Folk, funk, soul, and pop are all handled with skill and creativity.

The singer/songwriter has enlisted quite a few local luminaries to back her up.  These include Shane Parker (drums), Rusty Carriere (bass), Tom Meikle (guitar, vocals), Jonny Cottrill (organ, piano), Tim Moher (sax), Trevor Bowan (trumpet), Adam Courts (trombone), Rick Guzik (accordion), Caesar (cello), Doug Johnson (pedal steel guitar), Dave Neigh of Steel City Rovers (violin), Rebekah Hawker (vocals), Liam Bristow (bass), Ian Koiter (keys) and The Vaudevillian.

CONGRATS! Joel Johnson, Vaudevillian and Johanna Pavia Going to International Blues Challenge in Memphis!


After an amazing contest held at Bobby O'Brien's in Kitchener, the International Blues Challenge reps of the Grand River Blues Society have been chosen.  Oshweken's Joel Johnson Band, Hamilton (formerly from Kitchener) duo, the Vaudevillian, and Kitchener's Johanna Pavia and Souldrive will be headed to the world-famous contest in Memphis.  They'll be competing January 20-24, 2015 against performers from around the world.

New Vaudevillian Album: Beedle Am Bam

If you love pre-war blues,  you should definitely check out Beedle Am Bam the latest album from Kitchener's The Vaudevillian (aka Brendan J Stephens).  He and his co-horts have created amazing original tunes in the 1920s era style with a bit of a modern spin.

With a gritty, raw, almost punk-like approach, Brendan shouts and growls with gusto while backed by great old-time sounds such as kazoo, a resonator guitar, washboard (courtesy of Willow Walker) and much more.

There's also a team of fabulous banjo players such as Dan Belgue, Willie Ames, Joey Bell, Minnie Hart (also fiddle), Michelle Horel, Buck Thompson, and Bill Howard (also piano).

Together, they have created some wonderful ragtime music with some muscle and dirt in its soul.  The kind that sounds like it came from the speakeasies from the wrong side of the tracks.
