The Vaudevillianmay be originally from Kitchener but are now Hamilton-based. The group's music is a perfect match for the former Steeltown as grit and dirt just ooze from these songs. This is as no-nonsense and raw as it gets.
The latest offering, Barton Street Bluesis filled with references to Hammertown and is sung with abandon. Featuring an old-timey sound that will transport you back in time, the disc also possesses a powerful, punk-like attitude.
Vaudevillian mainstays Brendan J Stephens (vocals/multiple instruments) and Willow Walker (vocals/washboard/banjo) are joined by Guy Johnson (bass), Minnie Heart of the Ever Lovin' Jug Band (fiddle), Danny Edmonds of Harlan Pepper (vocals/banjo/Producer), Mimi Shaw (vocals) and Aaron on sax.
You can pick up this CD at their live shows or download it via Bandcamp.
Hamilton (formerly of Kitchener) duo, The Vaudevillian continue with their fabulous, raw pre-war blues sound on Salty Dog, their current album. Banjos, kazoos and washboards revel with fiddles, accordions and ukes with great abandon.
The Hamilton Music Award Nominated recording is loaded with good time energy and you can't help but feel the ethereal spirit of punk in the mix. The six stunning originals and three marvelous covers take you to the ancient bayous!
Some albums escape our radar, so occasionally we'll be catching up with some mini-reviews!
Vaudevillian's 2013 releaseBourbon and Basements is a more stripped down affair but the rawness of it works extremely well. Brendan's urgent vocals give everything such amazing power. The album can be loaded through Bandcampas well.
Waterloo singer/songwriter Dan Belgue makes a superb solo debut with his album Tall Tales and Dusty Trails. Its has an old fashioned, banjo-pickin', laid back, live-off-the floor feel.
You'll be tappin' your feet and groovin' to the uptempo tunes and basking in the glow of the lighter songs. Either way, Dan's vocals will impress and the band's skill will blow you away.
That amazing group includes members of the Ever Lovin' Jug Band as well as Dave Rozell Soehner (mandolin/lap steel),Tim Pike (pump organ) and Laura Ashfield (harmony vocals). They back up Dan perfectly.
