Local Nominees at 2026 Forest City London Music Awards! Vote (Deadline May 8)


There a few local connections among the nominees for the 2026 Forest City London Music Awards.
  • Former Hamiltonian Paul Langille is up for the Blues category
  • The Lowdown Dirty Mojos features band members who are currently living in Hamilton/Oakville gor the nod for Ontario Independent Recording Artist of the Year
  • Tribute artist nomiee Disgusteen, cover tunes from Hamilton punk veterans Teenage Head
People can vote for their favourites until May 8, 2026 by clicking here

Winners will be revealed in two events: June 7, 2026 at Aeolian Hall and June 14, 2026 at London Music Hall as part of London Music Week - June 6 to 14.

Throwback Thursday! Copperpenny, Teenage Head CNE Riot, Paul Langille Labatt's Commercial

Copperpenny was a Canadian rock band from Kitchener, Ontario. They were formed in 1965 by Kenny Hollis and Rich Wamil, and were originally known as the Penny Farthings, to reflect the British Invasion. Not long after their formation they adopted Copperpenny as their new moniker, after a B-side by Toronto band The Paupers.

In 1968, the release of "Nice Girl" on Columbia Records garnered the group moderate success. They soon switched to RCA and enjoyed a minor hit with "Stop (Wait A Minute)." However, it was not until after they moved to Sweet Plum Records, a division of London Records, that they enjoyed their first major success.

"You're Still The One" was the band's first mainstream hit and the follow-up, 1973's "Sitting on a Poor Man's Throne," was recorded in Dearborn, Michigan, with Richard Becker.

Copperpenny continued to record as they toured the United States with Led Zeppelin, Bob Seger, The Guess Who and Uriah Heep.

1975 saw them sign on with Capitol Records. They made several appearances on television shows such as "Keith Hampshire's Music Machine". Copperpenny even had a short-lived variety show that launched the career of a then unknown magician named Doug Henning.

During this period, they had continued success with the singles "Disco Queen", "Good Time Sally" and "Suspicious Love". They toured Canada in support of the Fuse album opening for the Swedish band Blue Swede. Their touring line-up included Mark Stephen Gendel on guitar, Bill Mair on bass and Jim Minas on Drums.

By the time their final record, Fuse, was released, most of the original members had already left the band. Rich Wamil supported the effort as Rich Wamil & Copperpenny, but the remaining band split up in 1978.

GOOD LUCK! Hamilton's Paul Langille Nominated for 2018 Jack Richardson Music Award


Former Hamiltonian, Paul Langille is up for a Jack Richardson London Music Award.  His duo Langille-Lockwood was nominated in the Blues category. Hopefully he'll bring home the award at the ceremony on April 15, 2018.

GOOD LUCK! Local Reps for 2018 International Blues Challenge in Memphis


For the first time, the Hamilton Blues Lovers (along with their mascot, Trebleclef  were on hand to see the Grand River Blues Society pick their representatives for the 2018 International Blues Challenge in Memphis.  Hopefully they will win during the January 2018 event.

The GRBS judges chose their winner at a wonderful music event on Sunday, September 24, 2017 at Bobby O'Brien's in Kitchener.

Hamilton music legend, Tim Gibbons beat out Ajax's Ragwax to go to the prestigious contest to compete in the solo/duo category.

There were 5 amazing groups vying for a trip to go to the competition: Gary Cain Band, Craig Dougan Band, Lonestar Cafe, Big D and The Topside Band, The Vaudevillian and the Outsider Band. In the end, Kitchener's Gary Cain Band won it.

In other local news, former Hamiltonian Paul Langille and his music partner Tom Lockwood have been chosen to represent the Great Lakes Blues Society in the IBC (for the second year in a row).

Local Super Fan Gary DePodesta Passes


It is our sad duty to report that Hamilton music super fan, Gary DePodesta passed away on July 22, 2017. A service will be held at Bayview Mausoleum (740 Spring Gardens Road, Burlington) at 11:00 am on Thursday, August 3, 2017. Our condolences to his family and friends.

Gary was one of the first people to get involved with the Hamilton Blues Lovers. He was a passionate local music supporter and became a good friend to my wife and me. I'll miss his good nature and wonderful conversations about music.

GOOD LUCK! Area Musicians Going to International Blues Challenge


On October 2, 2016 the Grand River Blues Society held a contest to choose their two reps for the 2017 International Blues Challenge in Memphis.  Bobby O'Brien's in Kitchener was home to the amazing event.  After all was said and done Hamilton's Andre Bisson Band and Waterloo's Silvia Dee and the Boyfriend (solo/duo contest) will be heading to Memphis to compete during the event from January 31-February 4, 2017.

Andre has this to say on his Facebook page: "Thank you GRBS for having us compete for you at the 2017 IBC Memphis Competition - International Blues Challenge! This is such an honour and we will give everything we've got when we are down there! Thanks to the band for their hard work, time and talent today, it meant a lot up us and we can't thank you enough!"

We also got word from Silvia Dee and the Boyfriend: "Silvia Dee and I are thrilled and honored to have been chosen to represent the Grand River Blues Society in the duo/category in Memphis. We are especially honored to have been amongst the wonderful artists who appeared last Sunday. We have such a vibrant and supportive blues community. Silvia and I are working very hard to put on the best show we possibly can at the IBC's. We are very excited to join with Hamilton's own Andre Bisson Band to carry the GBRS message to The IBC's."

The Great Lakes Blues Society also nominated former Hamiltonian Paul Langille as their rep for the show.  He's in the group category with his musical partner Tom Lockwood from Chatham.  London's The Focklers will be in the band competition.

Paul had the following to say: " I'm very pleased and honoured to be chosen with Tom Lockwood to represent, the Great Lakes Blues Society, at the international challenge in Memphis. This should be the place where I get to spread my Blues Wings a little. I once wrote, " I may never get to Memphis", but now I guess that ain't true."

              Hamilton Loses Brian Griffith, One of Its Guitar Giants


              It is with sadness that we announce the passing of the super-talented Hamilton guitarist Brian Griffith.  He passed away in his sleep on Friday, November 14, 2014.  Condolences to his family, friends and fans.

              In a city full of amazing guitarists, he was one of the most in demand and sought after players.  The man could play country, soul, blues, rock, reggae and anything that was thrown at him - he was a true professional.  His amazing work led him to team up with such international stars as Emmylou Harris, Willie Nelson, Daniel Lanois and more.

              Brian was also one of the most beloved figures in the Steeltown musical scene. His good nature and generosity as a musician will always be remembered.

              A word from Lou, our blogger: "I'm sad to hear of the passing of my friend Brian.  I had seen him numerous times with different musicians and he always knocked it out of the park.  On top of that, he always had a smile and a laugh to share with me.  Brian's good nature was infectious.  I'll truly miss him"

              The outpouring of love on social media was incredible.

              Harrison Kennedy: " I am heartbroken deeply. He played anything and everything well on any guitar."

              Shawn Brush: "Brian was a fine human being and will be missed by many. He would often greet me with a hug or a kiss on the forehead. He was a friend and a fan who admired and encouraged me with my music. I will miss him, but will endeavor to keep his presence alive and felt through my performances. I know there are many people that will miss him."

              Paul Langille: "A kind gentle man with a wicked sense of humour, and one of the most talented musicians I have ever had the honour of working with."

              Robin Benedict: "There is a dark cloud that is overwhelming my city tonight and forever!! Brian Griffith, you have been such a light in this Musically electric place and you have made your mark all over the world!"

              Tomi Swick: "We lost one of the most amazing beautiful people and players any of us will ever know, I have your words on my skin brother. No matter where we go no matter what we do we will always be brothers of the wind."

              Michael Hickey: "If one could hear love...you could certainly hear it in every note Brian played."

              Paul Panchezak (Trickbag): "His phenomenal talent was surpassed by his beautiful soul. He was always an encouraging friend. A gentle man. And a gentleman. We loved sharing the latest boxing news when our paths crossed. I can't believe he's gone."

              Justin Sawicki: "Brian Griffith was a pillar in the Hamilton music scene. He was was the first act I saw when I moved to Hamilton just over a decade ago. I can remember seeing him play for the first time and thinking it was impossible to do what he did with a guitar, yet somehow those impossible notes were flowing mightily out of his fingers. You will be missed dearly in this Steel Town. Your town."

              New Paul Langille CD: Pine and Locke

              It's been a long while (over 10 years) since we've heard a new CD from  hometown boy Paul Langille.  Pine and Locke breaks that silence with great style.

              On this impressive release, Paul uses his trademark growl but also goes beyond . You can experience the singer's range in the emotion of songs like Broken and Just a Broken Soul.  Then there's the blues power of Kind of Girl, the country style of Honky Tonk, the ragtime sounds of Home Sweet Home and more.  He can do it all!

              The CD's title isn't the only nod to the singer/songwriter's steeltown roots.  Michael J. Birthelmer produced the disc at his Hamilton studio.  A bevy of area talent was also brought in to support Paul.  Members of Trickbag (Les Smith, Mike Hickey, Paul & Donna Panchezak) , Lily Sazz (Groove Corporation), Ed Roth, Brian Griffith, Lisa Winn, Jude Johnson, and others make wonderful contributions.  Paul also covers Playing to Win, a song by local musician Wayne Krawchuk (Banned From Heaven)

              The marvellous CD is available at his live shows and as a download on iTunes.

              Episodes of Ensemble Music TV Show on YouTube

              Ensemble is a music-based TV show on Cable 14 Hamilton that features four singer/songwriters per episode.

              The show runs on Saturdays at 10pm and Sundays at 9pm.  There is a new episode each month or so.  You can also watch the program online with their live feed if you are a Cogeco, Shaw, or Source Cable subscriber.

              Recently, many of the episodes were placed on Cable 14's YouTube page.

              Vote for the Canadian Music Party


              HBL (Hamilton Blues Lovers) Inc doesn’t usually get involved in politics but we’ve decided to help spread the good word about the newly formed Canadian Music Party. A few local musicians were tired of the current political climate and decided to take matters into their own hands.

              Our very own blogger, Lou, was put in charge of propaganda. “We think it’s about time musicians had a say in how this country is run,” he explained.

              “At our last meeting, we chose singer/songwriter/artist Tom Wilson as our leader and hopefully, the next Prime Minister,” Lou added, “There were many worthy candidates. In the end, it was hard to ignore Mr. Wilson’s passion and commitment (not to mention his height) when the final tally was counted.”

              Mr. Wilson and the party have already outlined the main points of their future election campaign:
              • Immediate decriminalization of marijuana
              • All government business will only start after 2 pm.
              • Groupies can now be listed as dependents on income tax
              • Instruments can now be listed as dependents on income tax
              • Requesting “Mustang Sally” or “Freebird” is punishable by life in prison
              • Stealing musical instruments will be punishable by death
              • Musicians to get LCBO tax discounts
              • Hamilton will become the Canadian capital
              • "Oh Canada" to be replaced by "Oh What a Feeling" as the national anthem
              • The Queen will be replaced by King Biscuit Boy on all money
              • Frankie Venom will be put on the $50 bill.
              • Jackie Washington will now be on the $100 bill
              Even though the next election is still far away, the party have already started hiring for various positions:
              With this many musicians in one place, Lou says they were going to advertise a groupie wrangler position but luckily, local music fan and videographer Jill Johnson graciously accepted the job as an unpaid volunteer. “We’d like to thank Jill for her selfless act and for saving us some money. I’m sure she’ll take real good care of those groupies!”

              So please remember to vote for your local CMP candidate when the next election rolls around. We need to put some more groove into Canadian parliament.
