King Biscuit Boy's 'Good 'Uns' Turns 50 This Year

This year (2022), Good 'Uns the second album from the legendary Hamilton Bluesman, King Biscuit Boy turns 50 years old.

Details:

We asked various members of the local music scene for their thoughts on the album. Here are their responses:

Ian Andrews

It's a hearty blues stew with remarkable flavors of sound; seasoned with tales of reckless living, rambunctious Cajun grooves, and a 'mouth of steel' charisma that impacts every listener and puts them in the heart of contentful chaos that resolves in grace. A great musical influence gone but not forgotten.
Ken Wallis (BluesSource Canada)
King Biscuit Boy’s album was the only album I ever owned that came wrapped in burlap. I think that was because inside the music was so hot that it needed a sturdy cover to stop the music from leaking out. The album is filled with classic King Biscuit Boy. His harmonica soars into the blues stratosphere. Just listen to Boom Boom Out Goes The Light. It is classic King Biscuit Boy and this was always the last song he’d play to close out a live gig. Hamilton was lucky to have witnessed such a talent.

Treble Men Drummer Steve Piper Passes

It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Steve Piper, the beloved drummer of Hamilton band, the Treble Men.  We will post more details when we have it.  Our condolences to his family, friends and fans.

There were a lot of social media reactions:

David Nicoloff (Treble Men, HellBent Rockers):
"The good you do today will be forgotten tomorrow. Do good anyway. That was our friend and brother. That is exactly who he is and will always be. I miss you Steve Piper. I promised you to be true. I will Never Let You Down. I will be more like you Steve Piper. RIP Steve......Forever a Treble Man. Twaaang."
Ian Andrews:  "Thank you Steve Piper for all of your gifts you offered the world. Your gentle soul touched many lives and your genuine light shone a way for many for so long. I'll never forget our times playing, when your face lit up the second I walked in to the green room at TAH. The world has lost a true gentleman and now you may shine on us all from up above. Rest in peace my friend."

Hamilton Harmonica Master John Hess Passes

We are saddened to report that local harmonica player extraordinaire John Hess passes away on December 10, 2015.  He frequently played open stages throughout the Hamilton area and had played with many local musicians.  Our condolences to his family, friends and fans.

Tom Finochio is planning a jam in his memory on Sunday, December 13 from 3 to 9 at Rebel's Rock in Hamilton.

There were a lot of comments on social media:

Ian Andrews:
John, I thank you for the music we shared and the times we had, the stages we shared as well as the laughs and most ridiculous puns we could come up with. You always supported my music endeavors and came to every jam I've ever had. It hurts the most that I had put my busy schedule before coming to visit you in the hospital and that we never did get a chance to hang out and record - I know damn well there was ample opportunity for it. I'm sorry John, and one day down the road you and I are gonna cut that record we talked about, but for now... Rest in peace my blues brother. Everytime I hear a harp, I'll never forget...

Wayne Janus:
John was a true gentleman and he will remain close to our hearts and thought of often. Blessings to you Dear friend. W.Janus

Troy Harmer:
Hamilton lost another charismatic and dedicated blues musician this week. He was always polite, kind, helpful and positive. Every Sunday up until he got sick, he would be at the open mic I hosted with the Persuaders at the Brown Barrel. Often times he would already be there set up with his amp and harmonicas ready to go before the band arrived. We will miss you my friend.
