Hamilton Music Legend Dallas Harms Passes

It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Canadian Country Music Legend Dallas Harms. The fabled Hamiltonian passed away on October 12, 2019. Our condolences to his family, friend and fans.

Dallas had many chart-topping hits including his number one smash Honky Tonkin' (All Night Long) and  Paper Rosie (later recorded by American Gene Watson as a top 3 single and title track to his album).

He was inducted to the Canadian Country Music Hall of Fame in 1989 and won the Hamilton Music Awards Lifetime Achievement Award in 2016.  Also Paper Rosie was inducted into Canadian Songwriting Hall of Fame in 2018.

2016: Year in Review

2016 was a mixed year. There were many losses in the musical community (local and international) but there was also some amazing music. Trebleclef, our music-lovin' mascot got his own Facebook page and we started our own Instagram page too.

As previously mentioned, a number of area artists passed this year.  These include Gordie Tapp, Guy Coolin (local music supporter), Brian Cober, Steve Piper (Treble Men), Mark Potter (Lester and the B Flats), Harold Kudlets (promoter), Libby Ferrelli (George Arnone Big Band), Lynn Russwurm, Paul Macleod, Mo' Kauffey, Tommy Hughes and Frank Panton (Brantford Open Stage regulars), Chris Shaver (local music supporter) and Rich Dawson (Rich and the Poor Boys). 

The rest of Canada also lost quite a few musical greats: John Mays (Fathead), Bob Walsh, Leonard Cohen, Doug Edwards (Chilliwack), Oscar Brand, Brian Rading (Five Man Eletrical Band), Bobby Curtola and John R Bellone (Bellone's Music in London, ON)

A number of international stars passed away this year as well: Greg Lake/Keith Emerson (ELP), Sharon Jones (Dap Kings), Leon Russell, Mose Allison, Phil Chess (Chess Records), Buckwheat Zydeco, Scotty Moore (Elvis guitarist), Sir Mack Rice ('Mustang Sally' songwriter), Dave Swarbrick (Fairport Convention), Guy Clark, Candye Kane, Lonnie Mack , George Martin  (Beatles producer), Paul Kantner/Signe Anderson (Jefferson Airplane Founders), Glenn Frey (Eagles),  Prince, George Michael, David Bowie, Natalie Cole and many more.

It was an unforgettable night at  Theatre Aquarius on Sunday, May 29, 2016. The Hamilton Music Awards ceremony was filled with laughs (courtesy of host Ian Thomas) amazing music (including a rare live performance from Lifetime Achievement recipient Dallas Harms) and much more.

Multiple winners (with two each) included Lee Harvey Osmond, Terra Lightfoot and Monster Truck.  Including the previous day's Gala Awards, the big winner of the year was Monster truck with 7 trophies followed by radio station CFMU and Terra Lightfoot with 4, then folk rock duo Whitehorse with 3.

CONGRATS! Dallas Harms and Jim Skarratt to Receive HMA Lifetime Achievement Awards

There'll be many people getting awards on May 29th at the Hamilton Music Awards.  It was recently revealed that two Lifetime Achievement Awards will go to well-deserving industry veterans that day.

Canadian Country Music Hall of Famer Dallas Harms (writer of such hits as Ballad of the Duke and I Picked a Daisy) earned the honour for his decades of musical excellence.

Jim Skarratt will also receive the same recognition but more for behind-the-scenes work.  He started as a concert promoter in the 60's and is still active through his company Skarratt Promotions and as the owner of Lazy Flamingo.
