Many of our incredible area musicians will be heading down to London for the Country Music Association of Ontario Awards on June 3, 2018. There were quite a few local nominees and hopefully they'll pick up some hardware.
Hamilton boasts a few nominees: Blue Rodeo (which has Hamilton's Colin Crippsin its current lineup) and radio stationKX 94.7 FM are up for awards.
This year's Canadian Country Music Award Association Award nominees were recently announced and it once again boasted a number of area musicians in the mix.
St. Catharines country boy, Tim Hicks can't seem to stop being nominated and winning awards and he's continued on here. Tim's up for 3 categories (Male Artist of the Year, Interactive Artist or Group of the Year and Recording Package of the Year)
Cambridge songstress, Shae Dupuy is running against Tim for Interactive Artist or Group of the Year as well. Also from that city is Rich DaSilva(Drummer of the Year).
The Waterloo area is also teeming with nominees thanks to Shane Guse (Fiddle Player of the Year, Special Instrument Player of the Year) and Jimmy Boudreau(Drummer of the Year). Both are from the group, Western Swing Authority . Barrytone Studios(also from the Waterloo region) received a nod for Recording Studio of the Year.
The inaugural Canadian Songwriting Competition finished up on May 2017 and songs by a number of area musicians were honoured by this fantastic contest. There were multiple categories and a huge grand prize.
The only local artist to win was Cambridge musician Shae Dupuy, who earned the top spot in the Country genre. Like all category winners, she wins $250 cash, recording time for a single, professional consultation and a subscription to Canadian Musician Magazine.
Three area songwriters were given honourable mentions in their categories: Burlington's Abby Hall(Under 18), JoJo Worthington(Gospel) from Waterloo and Guelph performer Mikalyn Hay(Pop).
The Grand Prize winner was Ottawa's the Free whose songFreedom Island impressed the judges. His spoils include $5,000 cash, a round trip flight anywhere in Canada, consulting services, recording, mixing and mastering time, professional photography, a radio campaign and much more.

You can help three area performers win the 2016 Unsigned Only Fandemonium competition! Presented by Radioairplay.com, the contest features songs submitted by independent artists. There is also a similar, separate competition chosen by a panel of judges (featuring the same nominees)
Steve Rivers (Milton) and Shae Dupuy (Cambridge) are up for the Country category, Maggie Szabo (Dundas) is in the running for Pop/Top 40 and Oakville popster Jules is once again up for the Teen category, which she won last year!
Our friends over at Cambridge Live Music have released Sounds of Cambridge, Vol. 1, the first in a (hopefully long) series of amazing compilations. It's a fabulous showcase of the wonderful musical talent in that area. Spanning a number of genres and boasting a mix of new and old tracks, the CD makes an unbelievably good introduction to the local scene.
From the website: "An independent jury of industry professionals had the unenviable, and daunting task of narrowing the submissions down to the final 19 songs presented here. This CD is not intended to represent a cross section of the Cambridge music scene; but it is a tasty sampler of some of the music that's getting played around town most weekends by these very talented artists."
According to their website: Unsigned Only is a unique annual international music competition designed for solo artists, bands, and singers who are not signed to a major label record company or any of its affiliates, subsidiaries, or imprints. The goal of Unsigned Only is to find an outstanding, talented performer: a band, singer, or solo artist...a newcomer or veteran...raw or polished - the “gem” that needs to be discovered. Unsigned Only is looking for the total package.
The grand prize went to Jared Porter And Kaylee Bell (Australia/New Zealand) who've won mentoring from industry pros.
