Bill Durst Wins 2026 Mel Brown Award

Stratford Bluesman Bill Durst the 2026 winner of the Mel Brown Blues Award. It is named in honour of the late, legendary Kitchener musician.

From the Kitchener Blues Festival Facebook page:

MAY 12TH 2021 – MEL BROWN BLUES AWARD

Bill Durst, our 2026 winner of the Mel Brown Award, and always an audience favourite, is a Canadian Blues- Rock- Roots guitarist, singer, songwriter, entertainer who has written and recorded over 125 songs on 12 albums with 7 national radio chart hits. Bill has opened for or shared the stage with Rush, Aerosmith, BTO, Yardbirds, John Mayall, Savoy Brown, Bobby Rush, Little Feat, George Thorogood, Bad Company, Loverboy, Edgar Winter Group, Jeff Healey, Burton Cummings, Johnny Winter, Rick Derringer, Jack de Keyser, April Wine, L.A. Guns, David Wilcox, Bob Seger, Sly And The Family Stone and more. Mr. Durst has toured across North America and in Europe and tours extensively in Canada.

As a kid growing up in Wingham and then London, Ontario (which is halfway between Toronto and Detroit), Bill was heavily influenced by Motown, R&B, Toronto Psychedelic Soul music as well as the British Blues Invasion and Jimi Hendrix.

Bill’s entrance on the national/international stage was with his classic rock band Thundermug formed from London R&B groups in 1969. By the summer of 1972 the band had a number one hit and a fan following in Eastern Canada. The band went on to record a total of 5 albums, (3 albums in the early/mid 1970s and two CDs in the mid 1990s) releasing records in the US and Europe. Bill put out his first two solo releases in the mid eighties but it wasn’t until the early 2000s that Durst got some real career momentum. In 2004 he proclaimed his intention to start up a “little, fuzzy, psychedelic blues band” and since then Bill and his co-writer Joe DeAngelis have produced 5 full length CDs: The Wharncliffe Sessions (’05), The Great Willy Mammoth (’09), Bill Durst Live (‘12) and Hard And Heavy (’13) Good Good Lovin ('15).

Music Champion & Boathouse Owner Kevin Doyle Passes

It is with sadness that we announce the passing of music champion and owner of Kitchener's Boathouse, Kevin Doyle. He died of cancer on Saturday, June 29, 2024 at Lisaard House in Cambridge.

Kevin was in important art of the Waterloo music scene. He hosted a radio show called Voodoo Healing on CKMS-FM for a few years. He was also involved in founding the Grand River Blues Society and  what later became the Kitchener Blues Festival. Kevin's Boathouse became a major music venue in Kitchener and is currently being prepared for relaunch.

A week ago we said goodbye to our dear friend, Kevin Doyle. Obviously, no words can sum up the enormity of his passing. As a pal msg’d me outta the gate, “This is a BIG one.” Indeed.

Friends and colleagues in KW, Ontario and around the country have paid such beautiful tribute over the last seven days. It’s been very comforting (also tough) to see and read them all. 🙏

This morning, as I embark on another eastern jaunt (albeit way smaller than in past), I’m reminded of all those times Paul (MacLeod ✨) and I would tour down east, both leaving from and returning home, to The Boathouse.

Kevin gave us all a home. Musically inclined/involved folks, especially. He and I stayed close these ten years AB (after BoHo), and I’ll never forget him.

Love You, KD. ♥️

Cindy Ward (Boathouse founder & co-owner)

Loved this man! --  20 years ago, back when I owned the Boathouse, Kevin Doyle walked in the door and the FIRST words he ever spoke to me were, "I love this place! Can I buy you a piano?"   - -  true story! lol . . . .  and he DID buy me a piano! haha. Within the year I took him in as a partner, and in 2006, after having my son, I sold the KW Boathouse to Kevin  -  and MAN, did he kill it !  - -  He kicked ass running that place and I couldn't have been prouder !  I was so mad at the city for what they did to him and I cheered loudly for the community uprising

I joke that The Boathouse was my first child. Sundays became my crying day, haha. Like crying at parades - - just the beauty of it all.

Early on, I never thought to do a Sunday afternoon show - but Kevin said, "Trust me, it will be great."  So, I did trust him  - and the MUSIC and the feeling in that room on Sunday afternoons were MAGICAL  - -  hence the crying, lol.

KEVIN BROUGHT THAT MAGIC TO THE BOATHOUSE

He loved music.  He called it vudoo healin'  (i mighta forgot how he spelled it : )   -  But it was magical.

The two early years that I owned the Boathouse were something very special in my life and I will always cherish those memories.  I will never forget the music and the people and so many incredible times. I knew I'd done something good . . . but I'm SOO glad that KEVIN MADE IT " GRRRREAT "    -   like Tony the tiger !    - -   I could never have done what Kevin did.  That man ooozed passion   . . . he just LOVED to bring musicians and music together for great music to be had  -  and GOOD TIMES in life to be made  -  in an otherwise tough and painful world -  hence the Blues . . . vudoo healin my friend!

It was his way of bringing LIFE and LOVE to the world.  That was Kevin.  But I think, more than that, it was also his ways of embracing and loving people. He was the ultimate bringer-together-of people and he just loved them. He truly loved people. He loved everybody. And you felt it!  He was genuine.

I've thought often of him recently and I'm so incredibly glad that I ran into him at Kitchener Blues Festival last year - a lovely face to face, kind words, a closure -  for our story. I loved that man. ALL THESE YEARS I WAS INCREDIBLY PROUD OF HIM  - -  He didn't just do good . . . . . .  HE DID GREAT !!   - -  Most people don't do GREAT . . Kevin Doyle was RARE !!  His impacts were real and were fierce! He will always be treasured.

Steve Parkinson and The Stony Lonesome

Man, its tough...But I will say a few words about my dear friend.

Kevin took me in to the Boathouse as a 17 year old (new, up and coming) drummer, to play with Douglas Watson. It was my first gig at the Boathouse.

As excited as I was to play with musicians like this, I could of never predicted that this room, with pink walls and scattered band posters would (almost) literally be my home for the next 10 or so years.

Doyle and I became buds, beyond the boathouse, we hung out, drank, laughed, constantly got in wrestling matches, and shared a tear here and there for our lost loved ones.

But during the boathouse hours, he continously pushed me to play. Not just with my bands, the droops, lucas stagg band, stoney lonesome, wet sugar, romeo sex fighter... theres more... What I mean is on top of all  that, is whenever an act he liked was on the road and Kevin wanted them to stop at his spot, they often were touring as a solo or duo project and he'd regularily suggest to them, "lets do the whole band, i've got a drummer, he'll learn your shit, it'll be great"  true fucking story. I kept my drums in the back room at the boathouse because I'd get calls on the regular to play with these touring acts, most of which I've never even heard of, and it was so exciting and completely molded me into the musician I am today.

The Perpetrators, Watermelon Slim, Sheepdogs,  Hell, even the Skydiggers... man, there was a lot more... He was the one to introduce me to Mel Brown. Then somehow I was playing regularly with this blues legend because Kevin Doyle said I was fit for the part. (Obviously a backup for mr. Jimmy Boudreau) I was proud as can be to be a back up to these monsters.

I never once asked Kevin for this kind of endorsement, he truly lived and loved music and this community is so damn lucky to have such an amazing person to push and support us the way he did.

I owe a lot to Doyle. He will be dearly missed. My bud.

"I'm pretty fuckin' sure this is Kevin Doyle".

Thanks buddy.

Love ya.

Brantford Music Promoter Victor 'Big Vic' Mirco Passes

It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Brantford music promotor, Victor 'Big Vic' Mirco. Unfortunately, we do not know the details but we will post them here when we know them.

A word from Lou, our blogger:

I got to know Big Vic well through promoting shows in Brantford. He was always fun to be around and knew a ton about music. I will miss his friendship. RIP Vic.

Bruce Hall, founder of the Grand River Blues Society

So sorry to hear this news of the passing of a good friend. Really enjoyed working with Big Vic on all his shows. He knew how to pack rooms with top notch entertainment. Will miss sparring with him on music trivia for he knew his stuff. Rest in Peace Victor.

Jeanna Jackson

So so sad to hear this, I knew Vic for the 25 years. I owned Brantford Minuteman Press Printing, he always printed the posters and tickets for the show.Vic would sit for hours at the office, talking , laughing crazy jokes i never got....hahaha, Last time I saw him was when he dropped off the coconut heads (from his parents) he had when he was cleaning the house. I have them still hanging on the wall. I will miss him always. xo. And I still have the files for all the old posters he would order. I am sure most are still on the old hard drive. Having some hanging up would be sweet memories of the loss of an amazing person.

Susan J Neziol

R.I.P. Vic Mirco  aka "Big Vic"...my dear friend ...you were a big part of our teenage years working at Records on Wheels and organizing bus trips...in particular, for me, the Police Picnic bus!  I have been lucky enough to have had you as a life long friend and attend many concerts with you....you will be dearly missed....xo

Rose Devereux

Been missing you at the blues for a while! He used to "pay me" in merch to start up the dance floor not that I needed to be persuaded. I miss harassing you  at your table 🤣 I know I have a million more photos like these somewhere and I’ll forever cherish them! The shows are so insanely huge these days im never the first person on the dance floor but it’s probably because we paved the way lol! Rest easy my friend you finally get to meet some of the greats that paved the way! Thank you for always making me feel so special ❤️

Brad Grose

Vic has left a lasting legacy of creating great times and a real celebration of music. A real Community Champion and a dear friend. Godspeed Vic.

You will be missed.

My sincere condolences to the family and friends 🧡

Blues Booster and Radio Host Patrick Monaghan Passes

It is with sadness that we announce the passing of one of the region's biggest Blues champions, Patrick Monaghan. He passed away in his sleep on Tuesday, July 25, 2023. Our condolences to his family, friends and fans.

Patrick hosted the award-winning program, Buckslide Blues Cruise on 100.9 Canoe FM. His tireless efforts helped promote many new artists. In 2022, Patrick was named Blues Booster of the year at the Maple Blues Awards.

Grand River Blues Society

If you knew Patrick, you experienced his huge smile and saw his thumbs up photos and if fortunate you were in the photo with him, both of you giving the big thumbs up. You had to admire his dedication, opinions about, knowledge of and rarely duplicated commitment to The Blues. Patrick loved experiencing and supporting the live music scene. If he couldn't find anyone to travel with to share in his numerous trips he just headed out himself like a gypsy.

He joined the Grand River Blues Society at the beginning 20 years ago and kept his membership active each year. He volunteered so many times to Judge the GRBS Road to Memphis Competitions and then travelled to Memphis to support the representing acts. He was one of a kind. Patrick was one of the kindest, nicest person you'd ever have the privilege to know. This truly is a sad moment for our tight knit Blues community. Rest in Peace our Blues Brother.

Gary Kendall (Downchild)

Sad news today to hear of the passing of our good friend and tireless supporter, Patrick Monaghan.  In February 2020 he told me that he was terminal, only had a few months left and he was going to continue living life.  Cancer was not going to stop him.  Well he did just that.  His Buckslide Blues radio show continued to showcase artists new and well established.  Pat did his best to make every blues show and special event that fell into his radar.  There must be thousands of his signature thumbs up photos circulating the world.  He and I made a pact that we would have our picture taken together at The Southside Shuffle every year.  We pulled it off in 2021 and 2022 falling just a little short in 2023 as he moves on to the other side.   My heart goes out to his family and friends with a special thank you to Christine who helped him get to the shows he just couldn't miss.  Goodbye my friend, thumbs up.

Smoke Wagon Blues Band

The past weeks have been really hard for the Blues and the music community and it's very difficult to yet again find the words today. The Blues world has lost a son today. We will miss that infectious smile! We will miss that big thumbs up! We will miss your voice! We will miss The Canadian Blues Energizer Bunny! We all love you Patrick

He was a huge supporter of the band, so much so that before he got sick he was planning on being our official manager. The Smoke Wagon Blues Band and I can not convey how much we appreciated your support and friendship over the years Pat. Outside of the band I've lost a great friend, I visited him on buckslide road, and met up with him around the province year round just to enjoy shows and hang. I will miss my Tuesday nights with Canoe FM but I will miss our weekly conversations on the phone the most of all. Its very difficult to imagine the Canadian Blues scene without you, you were an inspiration of tenacity and energy to us all, a lesson on how to live and fight for your dreams.

It was his bucket list to put on the first ever Haliburton Blues Festival this summer and it breaks my heart to know we won't be celebrating it together. Thank you Patrick for everything. Onward through the fog

Jim Dan Dee

Dear Patrick Monaghan,
I am so very sad to hear of your passing today, and so grateful to have known you.
I will miss your late night phone calls, stories of Blues legends in smokey clubs and boxing matches. You almost died too many times but then were right back out there at the clubs and festivals; I haven't ever seen someone fight as hard as you and your fuel was gratitude and the Blues. What a life you've lived.
Never will there be a more tremendous supporter of live music, nor a more charismatic smile and the trademark "thumbs up" in EVERY pic. You painted a picture of positivity in the toughest of situations.
I will miss your raspy voice, and your support and encouragement so much. You were the man behind so many meetings with Blues legends and festival coordinators, and believed in me from day one.
I really wish that I picked up the phone one last time... my first thought was to call you when I got the news. You've got one last concert in you, I know it.
You're a true beauty, I'm glad you aren't struggling anymore. My deepest sympathies to Christine without whom you couldn't have continued to attend every damn concert regardless of your health state. All my love and support to Pat's close friends and family.
I'm sure the concerts are even better up there where you are, as are the photo ops. Sending a big thumbs up to my man, Patrick "Madman" Monaghan. Enjoy the big gig in the sky my friend.

The Grand River Blues Society Turns 20!

Today (May 25, 2023) is that day that the Grand River Blues Society turns 20 years old. We here at HBL salute this amazing organization that has helped keep the Blues alive in our area.

Here are few comments about the anniversary:

Bruce Hall (President, GRBS)
The Grand River Blues Society is celebrating its 20th anniversary this week on Thursday May 25th. We have indeed come a long way from the grass roots launch in Cambridge where in fact about 80 blues fans joined us then for a twenty dollar fee. We are proud that that annual membership is still only twenty dollars.
We would like to celebrate our success by honoring all our members, volunteers, venues, musicians and directors past and present who have helped make this feat possible. The GRBS has committed to making 2023 a year long celebration with more exciting shows and announcements to come. I invite you to check us out on Facebook and our website

Keep Shufflin'

Lou (HBL blogger and founder)

As a member and volunteer for the GRBS, I get to see first hand the dedication the board members and the volunteers have to local music. Blues is in their blood and they work hard to support local artists. Cheers!

Corey Lueck (Smoke Wagon Blues Band)

Congratulations to the Grand River Blues society for turning 20! The best thing about the GRBS is the fact that it feels more like a Blues family then a society. We've been honored to represent the Grand River blues society in Memphis at the Memphis Blues challenge and to have performed at their 10th anniversary which seems like yesterday!  They are an inspiration to how a blues society should be run with genuine passion and love for preserving the Blues and we look forward to many more years of  continued success with our Blues family.

John McKinley

The GRBS has been at the forefront of creating a love & appreciation for Blues amongst the youth in our community via the Blues in the Schools program, The Grand River Blues Camp and The Youth Legacy Contest. I have personally witnessed its growth & impact over many years.
