Throwback Thursday - Mark McNeil: Greetings From Hamilton

Original Post: August 12, 2009

Updated Post: August 20, 2026

Update: This album is not available on streaming services and is now hard to find on CD.

Spectator reporter and musician, Mark McNeil recently released his third recording: Greetings from Hamilton.

The six songs on the EP showcase Mark's expressive voice, and his amazing talent with various instruments: guitar (acoustic, electric, Hawaiian, slide), bass, ukulele, banjo and mandolin.

The music is an incredible combination of folk, country, pop and many other styles. There is even a little reggae-esque feeling on the first track, Early Bird.

Lyrically, the album is a wonderful look at the many facets of Hamilton. Mark writes about his experiences in his adopted city (he's originally from Ottawa but has lived here for over 25 years).

"It's kind of a postcard to friends from long ago - to say I'm having a good time and I don't think I'll be moving back to Ottawa any time soon." Mark wrote in the the liner notes.

Joining in his celebration of Hamilton are a few local players such as Steve Sinnicks, Aaron Goldstein, Ray Lyell, Troy Dowding, and more. The disc is produced by Mark and Dan Medakovic and Engineered by Dan Medakovic and Rob Lamothe

Trebleclef Training for the Olympics

Paris, France will be hosting the Summer Olympics in July and don't be surprised if you see a familiar, furry face on the podium. Our very own cute mascot, Trebleclef, will be representing Canada this year!

Canadian Olympic ambassador, Lu (who happens to be our blogger) is the man responsible for this rather interesting turn of events.

"I spoke with the Olympic committee a few years ago," he explained, "They were interested in beefing up the popularity of the games and I suggested adding music-related events." With that stroke of genius, a trio of competitions were born: Duelling Banjos, the Accordion Toss and Upright Bass Rowing.

Duelling Banjos

The Accordion Toss

Upright Bass Rowing

"Treble, being the energetic monkey that he is," Lu added, "Asked if he could take part in all three new sports. After checking the rule book, we saw there was nothing saying that stuffed monkeys can't compete. With that, we started the little guy's training."

Thanks to sponsorship from Luigi's Used Jock Strap Emporium, Treble's team was able to get things rolling. Right away, accordion virtuoso Jordan Abraham was hired to train the mascot in the Accordion Toss. Justine Fischer will handle Upright Bass Rowing and Dan Medakovic will help him with Duelling Banjos.

April Fulcilli, Treble's sports publicist, had this to add: "Considering he doesn't have any muscles or skeletal structure to speak of, we can overcome these obstacles and bring home the gold for Canada!"

GOOD LUCK BUDDY!

RIP Ella Grace Medakovic  Feb 26,2001 - Aug 16, 2022.

We are absolutely devastated to announce the death of our beautiful daughter Ella Medakovic who died peacefully in her sleep yesterday morning,

For those who knew her well, you will know she was an incredibly kind, generous and loving person, who cared deeply for all of the people in her life.

She tried so hard, and she deserved so much more. Our hearts are broken.  She was a beautiful soul, who lived and loved big.

Hamilton's Danny Medakovic Has Something for Everyone on New CD

Very few songwriters around can match Danny Medakovic's skill and diversity. His latest album, The Years offers a variety of tastes for the discerning Folk/Americana connoisseur. From country drinking songs, political commentary, historical tales, soulful emotional laments and beyond, Dan has something for everyone. He even throws in some touches of  reggae, blues and more to spice things up.

Dan's lyrical storytelling is second to none as the songs veer from poetic to whimsical to impassioned and more. Each tune tells a wonderfully-told tale and has its own unique spirit.

Aiding Dan is great group of musicians, including Alan Hinckley (bass), Michael Scott (drums), Chris Altmann (pedal steel), Denis Keldie (keyboard), Geoff Ball (cello), Mark Volkov of Cootes Paradise (sax), Les Smith (harmonica) and Mike Trebilcock (background vocals).

CDs,Vinyl and downloads are available at his live shows at through his Bandcamp page. As an amazing bonus, the recording also includes a songbook with lyrics, chords and comments.
