Steve Strongman Rocks on Dynamic Horojo Trio Debut Album

Hamilton's Steve Strongman recently added his stamp to an already impressive debut from the dynamic supergroup, Horojo Trio. Set the Record (released through Waterdown's Stony Plain Records) is a muscular recording featuring top Bluesman in peak form.

The group features three powerhouses: Jeff Rogers on vocals/keys, JW Jones on guitar and Jamie Holmes on drums. Steve Strongman adds his backup vocals and incredible production skills to two of the tracks (A Little Goes A Long Way & Hard As I Can) while also adding acoustic guitar to A Little Goes A Long Way.

Canadian Blues Great 'Harpdog Brown' Passes

It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Canadian Blues great Harpdog Brown on January 7, 2022. He was from Vancouver, BC but played our area quite a lot. Harpdog won various awards and was nominated for a Juno.

From his Facebook page:

It is with great sadness to have to inform all of Harpdog's fans.. friends.. and everyone he has touched.. that the legend himself passed away today in his home. Peacefully.. now he will be jamming with all his music mentors he talks of and loved to play their songs. He loved you all!

Such sad news this morning. Harpdog Brown passed away last night. The epitome of big hearted. An old school blues man; hard living, hard driving, fun loving and a generous soul. He lived and loved the blues. Dog you will be missed by many. RIP.

Damn sad to hear about Harpdog Brown passing. Bluesman. Trouble-maker. Long-winded. Lover. Larger-Than-Life-Personality. Purist. Real-Deal. He lived like the legends of the music he played, a lot of the time. We first met in about 2002 I think when he had me on his radio show in Edmonton. We played together many times and the fit was natural. What a guy... what a loss...RIP

CONGRATS! Canadians Win at the International Blues Challenge!

A few local artists went to this year's International Blues Challenge in Memphis but though the the FOG Blues and Brass Band from Kitchener reached the semi-finals, none of them took home awards. Canada didn't come home empty handed though. Two Ottawa-based bands made their country proud. JW-Jones earned the Gibson Guitarist Award and Horojo Trio won 1st Place in the band contest.

CONGRATS! Hamilton-Packed Album Wins Maple Blues Award

Canadian Blues legend Colin James swept the Maple Blues Awards with 5 wins. He was a similar face at the podium during the ceremony on February 4, 2019 at Koerner Hall in Toronto. His fabulous recording Miles to Go features Hamiltonians Jesse O'Brien (keys, writing), Steve Pelletier (bass) and Tom Wilson aka Lee Harvey Osmond (writing). Also, it's released by Waterdown's True North Records).

Former Simply Saucer Manager Rick Bissell Passes

Rick was the 'discoverer' of Simply Saucer in 1974, our first manager. He set up the Master Sound studio sessions with the Lanois Brothers that ultimately became side one of Cyborgs Revisited. Husband of his beloved and beautiful Monique, father of Shawn.

Originally from Montreal, Rick came to Hamilton and set up one of the first import record stores here, Hermandad Records in the Lister Block in the early 1970's. Some of you record collectors out there will remember the cool imports you could buy at the store. He was a communications consultant for Bell and AT&T, brought his family with him to Saudia Arabia for a time where he did consulting work there.

Well there's much more to tell about our friend but tonight's the time to mourn the passing of our cherished friend, Rick. May he rest in peace.

CONGRATS! Canadians Win in 3 International Blues Challenge Categories!

Musical Canucks made an amazing showing at the 33rd International Blues Challenge. Montreal boasted two champs: Dawn Tyler Watson (Band- 1st place) and her guitarist Ben Racine (Guitar- Band). Ottawa's JW Jones won for Best Self-Produced CD. Toronto Bluesman Sugar Brown was also a finalist in the Solo/Duo category.

CONGRATS! Area Artists Shine in Blind Lemon Radio's Top 20 List

For the Canadian Blues community, Blind Lemon Blues Radio's Annual Top 20 Album List is a highlight of the year. In January 2015, the results of public online voting were tallied and the favourites from 2014 were unveiled.

As always, many talented Blues musicians from our area were honoured. Hamiltonians Andre Bisson (5), Jack de Keyzer (9) and Steve Strongman (15) all make appearances on the list. Oshweken's Joel Johnson and Downchild (with members from the Niagara and Brant regions) earned the 17th and 18th spots respectively.
