It's time to get out and vote for the 2017 Hamilton Community News Reader's Choice Awards.  Deadline to get your vote out is Sunday, March 5, 2017 at 11:30pm.

There are two main categories of interest to our music-loving readers: Live Entertainment and Professional Entertainers.

Hamilton's Kathryn Stachyra of Whiskey Concussion Passes

It is with sadness that announce the passing of Hamilton's Kathryn Stachyra, the lead singer of Mississauga rock band Whiskey Concussion. She died on Saturday, February 11, 2017 following a vehicle crash.  Our condolences to her family, friends and fans.

Her band posted the following on their Facebook page:
It is with heavy hearts we announce that our vocalist and dear friend Kathryn Stachyra has succumb to her injuries and passed away peacefully surrounded by family. Our condolences, thoughts and prayers go out to her family at this time. Her personality and character on and off the stage are like no other. Her footprint on this group will never be forgotten. Our fiery rockstar will forever be in our hearts and her spirit will guide us from this day forward.

GOOD LUCK! Hamilton-Born Ben Caplan Up for 4 East Coast Music Awards

The influence of the hammer is being felt on the east side of Canada! Hamilton-born singer-songwriter Ben Caplan has once again been nominated for The East Coast Music Awards (Solo Recording, Songwriter, Fan's Choice Entertainer, Fan's Choice Video). The awards gala is set for April 27 at Harbour Station in Saint John, New Brunswick.

Ekectronic group REPARTEE lead the pack with 5 nods. Ben Caplan joins Caroline Savoie, Les Hôtesses d'Hilaire, the Motorleague, Erin Costelo and Paper Lions in the second spot with 4 nominations.

      GOOD LUCK! Lots of Local Juno Nominees

      As always, there were a number of local artists nominated for Junos this year.

      Hamilton is well represented thanks to Monster Truck, who are up for 3 awards (Rock Album, Producer, Recording Engineer) and the Arkells who are in the running for 2 (Group, Rock Album). Other Hammertown hopefuls include Whitehorse (Blues Album), The Dirty Nil (Breakthrough Group), Matthew and Jill Barber (Contemporary Roots Album), Corin Raymond (Contemporary Roots Album), David Braid (Instrumental Album) and Diana Panton (Children's Album). Another Blues Album nominee, Ride the One, from Toronto's Paul Reddick, includes work from Hamilton's own Colin Cripps.

      St. Catherines alt-rockers Alexisonfire received a nod for Best Package of the Year for their album Live at Copps.(recorded in Hamilton). New Kitchener resident Sean Pinchin will be up for Blues Album of the Year.

      We'll be rooting for them at the ceremony on Sunday, April 2, 2017 in Ottawa.


      Drake, Shawn Mendes and the Weeknd lead the pack with 5 nominations. Gord Downie is up for 4 for his solo work but also received 2 nods for his band, The Tragically Hip.
