Throwback Thursday - Dave Pomfret: No Rush + Album Release Videos

Former Munday Nuns member, Dave Pomfret's album, No Rush, is an amazing collection of songs that's hard to pin down stylistically.

Dave goes from catchy, rockin' riffs to mellow melodies. On the way, he touches on folk, rock, and even bits of pop and country thrown in.

Joining Dave in making this great music is former Nuns bandmate (and former member of the Killjoys) Mike Trebilcock on guitar and many other instruments. Mike also produced the disc.

A number of other talented performers aided and abetted the singer/songwriter, including: Mark McIntyre (bass), Aaron Goldstein (pedal steel guitar), Craig Lapsley (drums), Troy Dowding (trumpet), Darcy Hepner (sax, organ), Rosemary Hale (violin), Sarah Honeyford (cello). On background vocals there's Mary Simon, Jean Caffeine, Karen Sturrock, and the Mississippi Kings. Dave's son, Brier Pomfret, plays the piano on it as well.

Pete Seeger's 100th Birthday

Today (Friday, May 3, 2019) would have been Folk legend Pete Seeger's 100th birthday. Pete left an indelible mark in the world of folk music. He was the quintessential activist/singer and inspired generations of artists.

We asked a few local artists for their thoughts on this unforgettable musician.

Steve Sinnicks

Pete Seeger always put the the folk in folk music. Just sing it and make it true. And reintroducing socks and sandals of course. A giant.

Dave Pomfret

I always found inspiration in his sense of song and melody. To me, he was proof that those elements need not be sacrificed to make a social or political statement.

Dan Medakovic

As a young adult growing up in a Catholic European family, The one thing that got me to church every week was the folk music that was played as part of mass.  Before I even knew who Pete Seeger was, I was already in love with songs like Where Have All the Flowers Gone, and, Turn, Turn, Turn.  

Pete’s music will forever be associated with everything good that happened in my early years. I had the pleasure of participating in a Pete Seeger sing-along event a couple of years ago. It felt like going to church; something I don’t do anymore. It was wonderful, and his music really brought everyone together.

Andy Griffiths

Pete Seeger's influence reaches far and wide ... across generations and genres. I don't think there are many musicians today who have not been touched by his music for the people!

'Shameless Subversion' CD An Amazing Showcase of Local Talent (That Makes a Difference)

Shameless Subversion (from Boxo Studios) is not just an amazing compilation of local music. The project's also an important, artistic, social statement featuring  the best singer/songwriters in the area.  According to producer Kevin Barber, "It's main goal is as a stigma-busting, mood-altering showpiece on the power of music."

Every song speaks to an aspect of mental health: from the many challenges to how music can be used as therapy for the performer as well as the listener.  Never clinical or preachy, these well-written tunes reveal pieces of the puzzle.

You'll find a lot of variety here.  All manner of vocals,  from raw and rough to smooth and enchanting, proclaim their wonderful lyrics.  Musically, there's high quality folk, blues, country, roots and everything in between.  Each song has its own soul but together, they form a fabulous testimony of the mental health world.
