Throwback Thursday - Dave Pomfret: No Rush + Album Release Videos

Former Munday Nuns member, Dave Pomfret's album, No Rush, is an amazing collection of songs that's hard to pin down stylistically.

Dave goes from catchy, rockin' riffs to mellow melodies. On the way, he touches on folk, rock, and even bits of pop and country thrown in.

Joining Dave in making this great music is former Nuns bandmate (and former member of the Killjoys) Mike Trebilcock on guitar and many other instruments. Mike also produced the disc.

A number of other talented performers aided and abetted the singer/songwriter, including: Mark McIntyre (bass), Aaron Goldstein (pedal steel guitar), Craig Lapsley (drums), Troy Dowding (trumpet), Darcy Hepner (sax, organ), Rosemary Hale (violin), Sarah Honeyford (cello). On background vocals there's Mary Simon, Jean Caffeine, Karen Sturrock, and the Mississippi Kings. Dave's son, Brier Pomfret, plays the piano on it as well.

Hamilton musician Mike Trebilcock (Killjoys, Monday Nuns) was featured in the December 31, 2025 edition of the Hamilton Spectator. The interesting story was about his work in scoring the upcoming, local puppet horror movie, Kylgor in the Grisly Abyss.

The Dik Van Dykes

From Wikipedia

The Dik Van Dykes were a garage punk sextet based in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada who first formed in 1985 and folded in 1989.

They released two albums, Nobody Likes...The Dik Van Dykes (1987), and Waste Mor Vinyl (1989), on the Og Records label, preceded by a limited edition indie cassette, Live At the Gown and Gavel and countless compilation records such as the It Came from Canada series issued by OG Records (the Deja Voodoo guys).

Most of the Dik Van Dykes' songs were humorous in nature, often satirizing local and Canadian culture. Curling, Birthday Song and Adult Gumby were fan favorites. The band received significant airplay on McMaster University's CFMU-FM 93.3, Memorial University of Newfoundland's CHMR 93.5, and many other student-run radio stations.

They opened for the Ramones on three nights in 1988, and played with other great bands of the era such as Shadowy Men on a Shadowy Planet, UIC, Wetspots, Heimlich Maneuver and Deja Voodoo.

In the 90s, Sarah Hodgson asked Mike (Dik) Johnson to join her band, Sinister Dude Ranch. He accepted, but with one condition, that the band change its name to I Love My Shih Tzu. The band's first song was actually a Dik Van Dykes song, Too Much Like Fun. The band broke up in the early 21st century.

Hamilton's Danny Medakovic Has Something for Everyone on New CD

Very few songwriters around can match Danny Medakovic's skill and diversity. His latest album, The Years offers a variety of tastes for the discerning Folk/Americana connoisseur. From country drinking songs, political commentary, historical tales, soulful emotional laments and beyond, Dan has something for everyone. He even throws in some touches of  reggae, blues and more to spice things up.

Dan's lyrical storytelling is second to none as the songs veer from poetic to whimsical to impassioned and more. Each tune tells a wonderfully-told tale and has its own unique spirit.

Aiding Dan is great group of musicians, including Alan Hinckley (bass), Michael Scott (drums), Chris Altmann (pedal steel), Denis Keldie (keyboard), Geoff Ball (cello), Mark Volkov of Cootes Paradise (sax), Les Smith (harmonica) and Mike Trebilcock (background vocals).

CDs,Vinyl and downloads are available at his live shows at through his Bandcamp page. As an amazing bonus, the recording also includes a songbook with lyrics, chords and comments.

Mark McNeil Brings Hamilton History to Musical Life on < Flashbacks >

History lessons don't have to be boring and dull, especially with Hamilton's colourful past.  The Hammer's Mark McNeil and his band of musical historians have taken the city's most interesting tales and brought them to vivid life on Flashbacks,

The CD is an extension of James Street, the incredible musical written by Mark. This Hamilton Music Award nominated album will tell you true tales about infamous alleged killer Evelyn Dick, a crazy monkey called Jacko, Einstein's brain, and Hamilton's military past.  History was never this fun!

Mark has enlisted some amazing Steeltown talent to add amazing music to these wonderful stories: Michael Hickey (bass), Paul Panchezak of Trickbag (drums/percussion), Jeff Griffiths (drums), Steve Parisien (guitar), Jay Burr (tuba/trombone), Charly Chiarelli (harmonica), Steve Fuller (fiddle), Cyndi Devereux (fiddle), Geoff Somers (fiddle), Allison Lupton (flute), Gayle Bridger (bodhran/cajon), Major Michael Rehill and the RHLI Military Band, Orange McFarland (bass). Background vocals by Mike Trebilcock, Paula Grove, Jon Gordon Odegaard, Kris Rochard and Scott Cameron Smith.

Hamilton's Frankie and Jimmy Scream the Blues and it Sounds Unbelieveable

From the dirty back alleys of Hamilton comes Frankie and Jimmy's debut LP, Scream the Blues.  As tough and gritty as Steeltown itself, the album has some raw and mighty Blues shouting. Ain't no polite, polished, soulless grooves to be found here.

The boys take a number of classic blues/early rock songs and strip them bare and roughs 'em up a little. The result is a sound that's both old fashoined and edgy with a punk-like vibe.  All beautifully masted by Mike Trebilock.

New Danny Medakovic CD, Jolley Cut, Makes You Dance and Makes You Think

Dundas singer/songwriter Danny Medakovic has struck the perfect balance between lyricism and rhythm.  On his latest CD, Jolley Cut, the words either tell a story or set a mood.  Also, he and his band give almost everything an infectious bounce.  It's great to dance to but also a little more artistic than your average release.

There's definitely a lot of fun on this album as he takes the listener to the great outdoors, Central America, on the road, and more.  For contrast, the tunes also touch on heartbreak, longing, and nostalgia.

Danny's superb team includes his Fry Truck bandmates Matt Coleman and Carrie Ashworth as well as ex-Fry Trucker Mike Trebilcock.  Other great guests on the album are Marshall Bureau, Chris Altmann, Mary Simon, Ben Bowen, Jay Burr, Troy Dowding, Aaron Zukewich, Jeff Pearce, and Jeff Ball.

New Caretakers CD: Love, War + PRopaganda

Love, War + PRopaganda is the latest CD from Hamilton's own folk-rock band with a conscience, the Caretakers.

The group have taken the amazing sound from their debut disc and journeyed beyond. The bedrock is still classic, melodic folk rock though. Lena Montecalvo's powerful vocals and Jeffrey Martin's character-filled voice are on full display, as always.

In this cool collection, you get the funkiness of Just Like California, the pop-flavoured Flowers for Peace, the countrified Left a Friend Behind, the catchy I'm the Happiest Man (featuring some cool Ukele work) and much more. Lyrically, they cover many social issues (especially on songs such as On Becoming Noam Chomsky and In Humanity We Trust).

Jeffrey and Lena are the core duo of the Caretakers. Joining them are a number of amazing local musicians such as Mike Trebilcock (who also produces), Carrie Ashworth, Barry Mac, Kim Deschamps, Jesse O'Brien, Matt Coleman and former Caretaker Norm Van Bergen

New Edgar Breau CD: Patches of Blue

One thing you won't find a lot of on Edgar Breau's latest CD, patches of blue is repetition. The local singer/songwriter covers a whole lot of ground in just 12 songs.

While mainly known as a member of the proto-punk/psych band, Simply Saucer, his solo endeavors are more on the rootsier side. Edgar explores all aspects of the genre: folk, country, blues, celtic, and much more. Every single song has a unique spirit.

Highlights include the trippy title track, the funky One Kind of Love, the wonderfully folky Dreams of Jack Kerouac, and the island sounds of Maria the Sea and the Sun.Joining Edgar in his musical explorations are Mike Trebilcock, Kyle Pacey, Bill Dillon, members of Trickbag (Michael Hickey, Paul Panchezak), Joe Clark, Brian Griffith, Ed Roth, Simply Saucer bassist Kevin Christoff, and Michael Birthelmer (who also produced).

The CD is available at his live shows as well as cdbaby and as downloads on eMusic, iTunes, and cdbaby.
