John Lee Hooker's 100th Birthday! Incl Local Covers


Tuesday, August 22, 2017 marks what would have been John Lee Hooker's 100th birthday! The Blues legend passed on June 21, 2001 but he will be an immortal figure in the music world.

Red Hot Jazz and Cool Blues @ Royal Botanical Gardens, Incl. Videos


There are only a few weeks left of the Red Hot Jazz and Cool Blues shows at the Royal Botanical Gardens in Burlington. Every Wednesday from 6:30pm to 9pm you'be able to hear some incredible music in a beautiful flowery setting. All it takes is admission to the gardens (members are always FREE).

Saturday Night Blues Continues to Bring You the Best (Pappy Johns Band, Joel Johnson, Erin McCallum, Dwayne LaForme)



Our friends at BluesSource Entertainment have been bringing some of the best artists around to the Jet Hall in Hamilton as part of their Saturday Night Blues series.  The next few weeks are no exception.  Every explosive show starts at 8pm.  Tickets are $10 advanced and $15 at the door.

CONGRATS: Joel Johnson and Jane Lewis Win Independent Music Awards!


The judges have spoken in the 14th Independent Music Awards and two local acts have received-much deserved accolades.   Ohsweken Bluesman, Joel Johnson got the Best Blues Album award for Blues Joose, Vol. 2 and Guelph singer/songwriter, Jane Lewis earned the Best Cover Song award for her rendition of the Beatles' Come Together.

Artists from around the world are nominated for these prestigious awards.  It's great to see talented area musicians shine in the international spotlight!

Hopefully, they haven't finished winning either because there's a people's choice portion of the awards.  You can vote for the nominees by clicking here.  Joel is also nominated in the Blues Song category for I'll Be Just Fine. Deadline is September 11, 2015. Good Luck!

The First Annual Hammer Blues Awards Celebrates Hamilton, the Blues Capital of Canada!


The First Annual Hammer Blues Awards (organized by the Hamilton Blues Society) were held at Jett Hall on April 25, 2015.  The awards portion of the show ended with a wonderful surprise: Hamilton City Hall's official recognition of Hamilton as the Blues Capital of Canada!  We all knew this in our hearts but now its all nice and legal!

The night was a celebration of the local talent that we are blessed to have in this area.  Winners had nothing but praise for this incredible city.  In her acceptance speech,  Canada's Queen of the Blues Rita Chiarelli proclaimed, "We don't just play the Blues, we identify with the Blues." "Hamilton is Bluestown," she added enthusiastically.

The Jack de Keyzer Band were the big winners of the night with the man himself winning for Electric Act of the Year and the band got 3 awards (bass, keyboard, sax).

Also, three music legends were added to the Hamilton Blues Society Wall of Fame that night as well. Veteran Sonny Del-Rio was inducted along with King Biscuit Boy and Jackie Washington.

CONGRATS! Area Artists Shine in Blind Lemon Radio's Top 20 List


For the Canadian Blues community, Blind Lemon Blues Radio's Annual Top 20 Album List is a highlight of the year.  In January 2015, the results of public online voting were tallied and the favourites from 2014 were unveiled.

As always, many talented Blues musicians from our area were honoured.  Hamiltonians Andre Bisson (5), Jack de Keyzer (9) and Steve Strongman (15) all make appearances on the list.  Oshweken's Joel Johnson and Downchild (with members from the Niagara and Brant regions) earned the 17th and 18th spots respectively.

GOOD LUCK! Local Musicians Up for the 2015 Maple Blues Awards


Once again, the Maple Blues Awards have nominated a lot of local artists for their prestigious awards ceremony.

Hamilton boy Steve Strongman is up for a trio of awards (Entertainer, Electric Act, Guitar Player) as is Steeltown Blues Legend Harrison Kennedy. (Acoustic Act, Male Vocalist, Songwriter).  Former Hammertown Bluesman Jack de Keyzer will be in the running for Electric Act too.

Other area nominees include Niagara's Suzie Vinnick (Female Vocalist), Brantford's Chuck Jackson (Male Vocalist + his band, Downchild is up for Electric Act and Recording), Kitchener's Jon Knight of Soulstack (Male Vocalist) and  Oshweken's Joel Johnson (New Artist).

CONGRATS! Joel Johnson, Vaudevillian and Johanna Pavia Going to International Blues Challenge in Memphis!


After an amazing contest held at Bobby O'Brien's in Kitchener, the International Blues Challenge reps of the Grand River Blues Society have been chosen.  Oshweken's Joel Johnson Band, Hamilton (formerly from Kitchener) duo, the Vaudevillian, and Kitchener's Johanna Pavia and Souldrive will be headed to the world-famous contest in Memphis.  They'll be competing January 20-24, 2015 against performers from around the world.

News Roundup (Johnny Winter, Polaris Short List, Big John and the Night Trippers, Maggie Ciere)


Local Reaction

James Anthony: I was invited into the dressing room by his manager and Johnny sat with me for about 20 mins and chatted. Very friendly guy. I had one of his Firebirds that I bought from a mutual friend and told him - A one pickup tabacco model.  He remembered the guitar and we had a laugh over it.  I'm sorry to have sold it.  He signed a book on blues players for me.  Here is guy that had a lot of problems like bad health from being an Albino, blindness, etc and he turned it all around and became a legend.  Very few could stand on a stage with Hendrix and BB King back then and not look stupid. One of the GREATS!  Cheers!

Joel Johnson: R.I.P Johnny Winter. He was a huge inspiration both guitar (texas blues/slide guitar) and vocal wise (the growl) to me. Cheers to a blues legend.

Tim Gibbons: Thanks Johnny, for the grit, the flash, for everything.

Jon Knight (Soulstack): Rest easy Johnny Winter. Johnny's lightning guitar style and vocal are touchstones for all of us. In 1992 I (Jon) heard him play at Madison Square gardens and all it took was his warm up lick before he ripped into Highway 61 to galvanize my desire to learn slide guitar. Chris had the opportunity while we were on the road last summer to meet the man, after a tip from the hotel staff he woke up at 8 in the morning and casually sat in the foyer with a newspaper and coffee waiting patiently to meet him.

Corey Lueck (Smoke Wagon): Johnny a true honest to god legend. Even though I do not play guitar he has been a huge influence on me. One of the greatest guitarists in the history of music let alone the blues. And the man that brought Muddy Waters back to us! Very lucky to have met him on more then one occasion. Always gracious and always tore it up! A real blues hero! I'm out of here for a shot of whisky and some careful with a fool... Very sad day.

 Steve Strongman: I'm so sad to hear the news about Johnny Winter. I had the pleasure of opening for him last March. He sang and played great ~ he's always been a big influence on me for sure. The guitar world has lost another hero.

Joel Johnson and Ghost Town Orchestra Up for Aboriginal People's Choice Music Awards


Brantford band, Ghost Town Orchestra (which features singer/songwriter Logan Staats rocking it up) and Ohsweken bluesman Joel Johnson have been nominated for 2014 Aboriginal People's Choice Music Awards. GTO is up for Best New Artists and best Rock CD while Joel is in the running for Best Blues CD.  Hopefully, they'll be taking home the harware on September 12, 2014 when the awards are handed out.

New Joel Johnson CD: Blues Joose Volume II

There's a boat-load o' boogie on Blues Joose Volume II, the latest disc from local blues master, Joel Johnson. He's a real guitar-slinging maestro and the man proves it on this disc.

From hard rockin' rhythms, swinging sounds to funky beats and even some softer moments, Joel can do it all with ease.  To spice things up there are two amazing instrumentals and exceptional covers of the Robert Johnson blues classic Crossroads and Jimi Hendrix's Little Wing.

His main band boasts Hamilton's Steve Pelletier (bass), Mike Fitzpatrick of  Downchild (drums), and  Wayne "Shakey" Dagenais (keys).  Guests on the album include Brantford's Dwayne LaForme (rhythm and lead guitar) plus local boys Troy Dowding (trumpet) and Ritch Thoman of Backroom 11 (sax).

The whole shebang was recorded right here at Catherine North Studios in Hamilton.
