    Blackie and the Rodeo Kings on Americana Music Association's Top 100 Airplay Chart

    Recently, the Americana Music Association revealed their 2017 Americana Airplay Chart Top 100 Albums List. Kings and Kings, the latest disc from Blackie and the Rodeo Kings (ft Hamilton's Tom Wilson, Guelph's Stephen Fearing and Toronto's Colin Linden) was on the list along with a few of their fellow Canadian artists.

    Johnny "Man" Young's 100th Birthday


    Today (Monday, January 1, 2018) would have been Johnny "Man" Young's 100th birthday.

    From Wikipedia:

    Johnny Young (January 1, 1918 – April 18, 1974) was an American blues singer, mandolin player and guitarist, significant as one of the first of the new generation of electric blues artists to record in Chicago after the Second World War. He was one of the few mandolin players active in blues music in the postwar era. His nickname, Man, came from his playing the mandolin.

    We asked local musicians for comments about Johnny:

    I never listened to a lot of Johnny Young when I was getting into Chicago Blues because there was so much emphasis on the Muddy and Wolf camps. But when you listen back now, mandolin playing blues with the popular Chicago artists of the day left a fascinating contrast and sound between urban and country blues, and makes you want to ride that mule 😎

    2017: Year in Review


    Like 2016, 2017 was also a  was a mixed year. Many in the musical community (both local and international) passed away but there were a number of wonderful news items as well. This year, the Hamilton Blues Lovers also proudly won the very first ever George R. Robinson Award from the Hamilton Musicians' Guild. 

    Local musicians who passed away in 2017 include: Skip Prokop of Lighthouse, Carl Horton,  Kathryn Stachyra (Whisky Concussion), Bill Crawford (Caledonia Folk Club Founder), music supporter Paul C Young, Herve Basset, Greg Peltz (local supporter), Hamilton superfan Gary DePodesta, Bryon Wapole (Backbeat Brian), David Gerry and Festival of Friends Volunteer Mosche Freedman

    The rest of Canada also lost quite a few musical greats: Gord Downie, Former April Wine Bassist Steve Lang, Founding Steppenwolf Keyboardist Goldy McJohn, Streetheart Singer Kenny Shields, Terry Graves of Headframe, Jurgen Peter of the Haunted, Bobby Taylor (of the Vancouvers), Music Teacher (and Oscar Peterson's sister) Daisy Peterson Sweeny, Quebec songwriter Réjean Ducharme, Quebec Singer Tex Lecor, Johnny Burke, Jan V. Matejcek (First SOCAN CEO), Canada's 'Pet' Juliette (Cavazzi), Drummer Pentti 'Whitey' Glan, Patrick Bourgeois of Les BB, 

    A number of international stars passed away this year as well: Tom Petty, Fats Domino, Chuck Berry, James Cotton, Gregg Allman, Lonnie Brooks, Charles Bradley, Glen Campbell, Walter Becker (Steely Dan), Soundgarden Frontman Chris Cornell, Malcolm Young (AC/DC), David Cassidy (Partridge Family), Jim Nabors (Gomer Pyle, singer), John Wetton (Asia, King Crimson), Geoff Nicholls (Black Sabbath keyboardist), Jim Fuller (Surfaris guitarist), Sib Hashian (ex-Boston drummer), Col. Bruce Hampton, Jimmy Copley, Anita Pallenberg (Keith Richards' ex-girlfriend), Erik Cartwright (ex-Foghat guitarist), David Hlubek (Molly Hatchet), George Young (Easybeats member and AC/DC producer), Jimmy Beaumont (Skyliners singer), Michael "DikMik" Davies (Hawkwind), Johnny Halladay (French rocker), Vincent Nguini (Paul Simon Guitarist)

    Hamilton's Piper Hayes Creates Beautiful Ethereal Soundscape on New Album


    There's a lot of folky acoustic goodness in Piper and Carson, the latest album from Hamilton's Piper Hayes. The Hammertown songwriter teamed up with her partner Carson Ritcey-Thorpe and recorded the album live off the floor. The relaxed atmosphere gives the songs room to breathe and express themselves.

    It's also a bit of a concept album as the tunes depict a full day from beginning to end. The storytelling is incredible featuring a tribute to her late mother, protest songs and more. The duo manage to tell their tale and create a beautiful, ethereal, organic soundscape.

    Helping them along is Chris Bartos (producer, multiple instruments), Kevin Neal (pedal steel) and Leah Ritcey-Thorpe (backup vocals).
