            GOOD LUCK! Local 2018 Canadian Folk Music Award Nominees


            It's great to see that the 2018 Canadian Folk Music Awards will feature a number of local artists. We're keeping our fingers crossed a few of them will bring home some CFMA's. The event takes place November 30 to December 1, 2018 at the Gateway in Alberta.

            Hamilton is well-represented with Dana Sipos (English Songwriter of the Year), Annie Sumi (New/Emerging Artists of the Year) and Jeremy Fisher Junior (Children's Album of the Year).

              Wainfleets' Suzie Vinnick is Electrified on New Album


              Shake the Love Around, the latest album from Wainfleet's Suzie Vinnick, finds our heroine with a more electrified but still rootsy sound. While the quieter, beautiful numbers are here, Suzie and her cohorts prove they can unleash some unabashed, bluesy rock if the need arises.

              You'll find some gospel, funk, folk, soul and more gracing this amazing album. The lady's voice and incredible storytelling permeate the recording with power and emotion. Her guitar and bass work also stand out.

              She has enlisted quite a contingent of stunning musicians. The main core of the band includes Gary Craig (drums), Mark Lalama (multi-instrumental, producer, co-writer) and Johnny Johnson (sax). Guests include Colin Linden (guitar) and Kevin Breit (guitar) as well as background vocals by Dean McTaggart and David Leask (who also co-write). Steve Strongman, Matt Andersen, and Treasa Levasseur offer up their writing skills as well.

              'Crazy Things' by Duane Rutter a Perfect Melding of Lyricism and Cool Riffing


              Duane Rutter is rightfully one of the most respected singer/songwriters around.  Armed with an incredible backing band, he now has a reputation as one of the most rockin' Americana/Country acts in Canada as well.  You can hear this new, fuel-injected sound on his latest amazing CD, Crazy Things (released through Busted Flat Records).

              Without sacrificing his usual beautifully crafted, rich songwork, Duane's souped up his tunes with infectious grooves and powerful guitars.  It's a perfect melding of lyricism and cool riffing.  A couple of graceful slower tracks show off the band's chops as well.

              Joining him on his new quest are his current bandmates Andrew Aldridge (guitars/Producer), Carrie Ashworth (bass), Steve "Honeyboy" Wood (pedal steel), Nick Burson (drums), Lisa Winn (vocals) and JB Reed of Human Orchestra (vocals).  Guests on the top notch album include Mark Lalama and Garth Hudson of The Band (both on keys) as well as "Sister" Maud Hudson (vocals). Mixing is done by the legendary Nick Blagona.

              So if you're looking for an album to that'll put a spring in your step, you can pick a copy up at any of Duane's live shows (including the upcoming CD Release at the Casbah on October 10, 2015).  CDs can be purchased at Encore Records in Kitchener as well.  It can also be downloaded using iTunes.

              'Cosmic Cowboy' by Niagara-on-the-Lake's Steve Goldberger Features an Astounding Mix of Styles


              Niagara-on-the-Lake singer and multi-instrumentalist  Steve Goldberger, has always mastered a range of styles (he leads the Americana/Roots band Old Winos and Blues/Soul outfit The Niagara Rhythm Section).  His 6th album, Cosmic Cowboy, shows him at his best.

              Steve and a number of his talented musical friends have put together an astounding mix of covers (including fabulous versions of Rodney Crowell and Nanci Griffith tunes) and unique originals.   Folk, Bluegrass, Country, Cajun, Roots and everything in-between are all performed with gusto.

              There's no shortage of accomplished musicians on this disc.  Vocal duets with Tim Hicks, Serena Pryne and Mary Simon (Mississippi Bends) are a major highlight.  Steve's also joined by Denis Keldie, Mark Lalama, Wendell Ferguson, Andrew Aldridge, Cam MacInnes, Roger Marin, Mike Glatt, Steve Grisbrook, Shane Guse (Western Swing Authority), Jeese Cobb, Jim Casson, Dave Norris, Andrew MacKay and Peter Griffin.

              Sisters Euclid Show Off Their Spectacular, Explosive Shows with Moonshine Run!

               

              A while back, patrons of the Moonshine Cafe in Oakville were treated to quite a few explosive shows from the fabulous instrumental progressive jazz band, Sisters Euclid. The band's now packaged their best performances from those dates in their new wonderful new album, Moonshine Run.

              Sisters Euclid is a supergroup of some of the finest musicians from Southwestern Ontario, The talented quartet includes Elora's Kevin Breit (guitar, mandolin), Welland's Mark Lalama (keyboards, accordion), Toronto's Ian DeSouza (bass) and Hamilton's Gary Taylor (drums)

              What these four guys have created is truly spectacular.  Shifting to experimental jazz to blues to funk and more, the band keep the groove going and throw in some brilliant musical surprises.

              If you've looking for a physical CD, you can pick it up at their live shows or buy one at the Moonshine Cafe.  It can also be downloaded through cdbaby and iTunes.

                New Andy Griffiths CD: Mind on Other Things

                Once again, local singer/songwriter Andy Griffiths, brings his great pop/folk/rock sound to a new disc.  Mind on Other Things is a great follow up to his previous CD, Looking at a Life ...

                This time, the spirit's a lot higher.  Tunes like Gone Forever, Lost My Groove, and Garbage into Space, are incredibly catchy and animated.  Slower moments such as Your Style and Your Smile and We Sing For Your Love work extremely well as a beautful contrast to the more kinetic ones.

                To end off the album, Andy's included two interesting, raw, bonus demo tracks.

                A few of the accomplished musicians from the previous disc make a triumphant return. Frank Koren, Ray Farrugia, Lawrie Ingles and others add their magic touch.

                There's some new blood is here as well.  Both Tomi Swick and Kim Koren add background vocals to a few tracks.  Jesse O'Brien tickles the ivories on 4 songs.  Mark Lalama even breaks out his accordion for wonderful The Fog Has Lifted.  There are too many other guests to mention but they all make this CD sound marvelous.
